Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

In an outstanding display of spin, craft and stamina, consisting of a total of 10 for 192 in 77.1 overs, Sophie Ecclestone became just the fifth woman to take five or more wickets in both innings of a Test match.

She was the second to do so for England, after Julia Greenwood against West Indies in 1979.

Between Lance Gibbs taking five in each innings in an innings win for West Indies at Old Trafford in the first Test in 1966, and Ecclestone's Trent Bridge performance, a total of 386 Tests had been played in England (344 men's, 42 women's).

Can you guess (or do you know) how many times a spinner has taken five or more wickets in both innings in those games? (Give yourself bonus points if you can name the bowlers.)

  4. What's happened so far...published at 10:22 British Summer Time 26 June 2023

It's been an engrossing four days at Trent Bridge in a match which has really ebbed and flowed, with the momentum swinging both ways.

Here's a recap of what's happened so far...

Australia won the toss, elected to bat first, and racked up 463 in the first innings spearhead by a century from 21-year-old Annabel Sutherland - her first in all international cricket - and 99 from Ellyse Perry.

That Australia did not compile a bigger total was largely thanks to England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone's figures of 5-129.

Tammy Beaumont ended day two with an unbeaten century. Then on day three she broke Elizabeth 'Betty' Snowball's 88-year record Test score of 189 for an England women's batter before becoming the first English woman to hit a double century.

Australia looked set to post a big total on day four after Beth Mooney's 85 and a half-century from skipper Alyssa Healy. But they were bowled out for 257 after Sophie Ecclestone took 5-63 as she finished with match figures of 10-192 from 77.1 overs

Set a victory target of 268 England reached 55-0 but then slipped to 73-4 as Ash Gardner's off-spin brought her 3-33. England reached stumps on 116-5 with Danni Wyatt (20 not out) and Kate Cross (5 not out) set to resume this morning with 152 needed for victory.
