  1. Connor 'deeply saddened' by ICEC reportpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Clare Connor, ECB deputy chief executive officer and managing director England Women, speaking on BBC Two about the ICEC Equity in Cricket report: "Firstly, I'm very saddened to read the extent of the testimonies and the breadth of the report was enormous and I have huge empathy for those who have suffered discrimination in the game we love.

"We want it to be a game where everyone is welcome and they can find a place to play and have any role in the game, so for the extent of the findings to be so broad and deep-rooted was obviously made for an uncomfortable read.

"It's given us a further catalyst for change. I think if I particularly think about the women's game, we know we've made enormous progress off the back of the Women's World Cup in 2017, we know we have a long way to go to really close some of the inequities across gender, not to mention, race and class around the game.

"It's an enormous opportunity to do so, cricket is in the spotlight, we commissioned the report, we wanted to learn more about where we are, where we have been across all those areas because we want cricket to be the most inclusive game it can be."

Clare Connor, Alex Hartley and Katherine Sciver-Brunt have been giving their reaction to the report.

  3. How realistic is that?published at 18:22 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

    It's a tough ask.

Australia are the current world champions in both the 50-over and 20-over formats. They also won the Commonwealth Games last year.

They have won 41 out of 42 one-day internationals in the last five years, and 56 out of 65 T20s.

England winning five out of six is a monumental ask.

  4. What do England need to win the Ashes?published at 18:21 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Australia, as holders, only need eight points to retain the Ashes.

That means two wins in any of the three T20s or three one-day internationals would be enough.

England need nine points, meaning they need to win at least four of the six remaining games and tie or have a no result in another.

Realistically they need to win five of the six games to win the Ashes.

In the build-up to this series we worked with CricViz to work out ways England could win this series.

They suggested going pace heavy at Edgbaston today because it takes wickets at an average of 22, with spin averaging 26.

England lined up three spinners during the T20 World Cup but have gone down to two today, so they followed that trend a little.

England: Sophia Dunkley, Danielle Wyatt, Alice Capsey, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Heather Knight (captain), Amy Jones (wk), Danielle Gibson, Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn, Freya Davies, Lauren Bell.

Australia: Beth Mooney, Alyssa Healy (captain & wk), Tahlia McGrath, Ash Gardner, Ellyse Perry, Grace Harris, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham, Jess Jonassen, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown.

Before we get into the cricket, there's bigger things we need to address. The ICEC report found that women are treated as subordinates at all levels of the sport and there is a wide spread culture of sexism and misogyny.

  8. Knight gives ICEC report insight after 'ironing' remarkpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

England captain Heather Knight says 'cricket still has way to go'

England captain Heather Knight says cricket has made progress but has "a long way to go" after a damning independent report released this week.

It found "widespread" discrimination in English and Welsh cricket.

Knight said: "I started out playing men's club cricket and being asked: 'Do you do the ironing for the men when you're finished?'

"Now I lead my team-mates out in front of a near-full house with 85,000 tickets sold for the whole series."

She added: "Cricket has come far, but still has a long way to go."

  9. Australia win toss and bowlpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Australia captain Alyssa Healy calls correctly and she fancies having a chase later on.

According to CricViz data a score of around 155 should be a winning total. That is the figure England will be targeting.

I spent about three years playing alongside Dani Gibson and can confirm that she is such an exciting prospect for England.

Watch out for her in the field in particular, she is probably one of the best in the country.

It's unclear how much Nat Sciver-Brunt will be able to bowl - she didn't take part in the bowling warm-ups from what I could see. That leaves Gibson with a big all-round role to play in a relatively inexperienced seam bowling line-up.

England are going to have a debutant in their side!

Western Storm all-rounder Danielle Gibson has been given her cap by former batter Fran Wilson.

Gibson was part of the travelling reserves that went to South Africa for February's T20 World Cup.
