"Trent Rockets started their title defence with a thrilling six-run win over Southern Brave in the opening game of The Hundred men's competition...." is the verdict of my esteemed colleague Sam Drury in his match report from this game.

8,800 in for the women’s game, 12,400 for the men’s - good numbers to start The Hundred. Feels like a good chance to capitalise on Ashes momentum, ECB will be hoping weather gives the comp a helping hand, too.

  5. 'It was frustrating to lose'published at 21:38 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

Southern Brave bowler Tymal Mills to BBC Two: "It was a frustrating one, it's always tough to lose, especially a tight game. Credit to them, they bowled well in the powerplay. CJ almost bought us home, but a really frustrating one to lose."

On the tight contest: "It wasn't one of those games where it was raining fours and sixes, but when you see tight games and close pressure, those are great to watch."

Being back at The Hundred after missing most of last season: "Pretty gutted to miss it last year after enjoying the first year. Fit and firing tonight, we will dust ourselves down for the next one."

Neil Iwanicki: Decent finale that to the opening game of The Hundred Well done to Trent Rockets on their victory tonight.

  7. 'Hain was fantastic'published at 21:32 British Summer Time 1 August 2023

Trent Rockets captain Lewis Gregory on BBC Two: "The boys were fantastic and what a game to start The Hundred. The crowd was rocking and that really helped us. Thankfully we got over the line.

"We've had amazing support over the past couple of years and that was no different. The crowd makes a difference in close games like that.

"As bowlers we knew we just had to hit the pitch as hard as we could because there was some nice movement out there and it wasn't the easiest to start your innings on.

"I just backed my instincts when I was bowling but I thought we were a bit under par with the bat.

"Sam Hain played fantastically to get us up to a total that we felt we could defend.

"It's the first time we've had to bring the fielder in at the end, so I'd rather not have to do that again! Hopefully we can get round a bit quicker next time."

When you win a game even when you're not at your best, and you get over the line when you're not favourites, that gives you a lot of confidence as a side.

Lewis Gregory has led them brilliantly tonight and his bowlers have backed him up.

Southern Brave will be disappointed. Their batting should have enough in the tank to be able to chase that score.

Daniel Sams really held his nerve in that final over, especially with the dismissal of Chris Jordan.

We really thought at the halfway stage that Southern Brave would make light work of that chase but Trent Rockets never gave up.

Lewis Gregory did the damage in the middle and credit to Sam Cook and Daniel Sams for holding their nerve at the end.

Mills lbw b Sams 1 (Brave 127 all out)

It's a full yorker from Daniel Sams and the only real question is whether there is any bat involved and there was not. The ball-tracking shows it would have gone on to clatter into middle stump.

    The Rockets have won it!

    Overton run out (Wood/Kohler-Cadmore) 1 (Brave 127-9)

Craig Overton is out by a mile. Well short of his ground.

Great work by Luke Wood on the boundary.

  17. Umpire reviewpublished at 2 balls left

Craig Overton attempts a quite ludicrious second run off Daniel Sams and is run out by Luke Wood, who keeps his calm and throws it into the gloves of Tom Kohler-Cadmore who whips off the bails.

The umpires send it upstairs it but this looks out.

    It's an absolute beauty.

Daniel Sams is under pressure as a bowler but as Saqib was saying then, he has just executed that plan beautifully. It must be such a satisfying feeling as a bowler.

    Huge celebrations from him too!

One of Chris Jordan's specialities at the death, a yorker, is his undoing as Daniel Sams hits his off stump.

    Sams sprints off in celebration.
