  1. NZ 24-1published at 5.5 overs

    Target 369

Devon Conway finds a boundary. It was just a drive into the ground but it quickly picks up pace and finds its way to the rope.

He will be hoping that sets him up for a big score.

Devon Conway is having a horrible time out there.

  3. NZ 19-1published at 5 overs

    Target 369

A wicket and just three runs come off the over, excellently bowled by Chris Woakes.

Considering a successful chase would require New Zealand recording the highest ODI run-chase in England, needing 350 off 45 overs is far from ideal.

When you charge at a bowler, it is very hard to stop the shot or back out of it when the bowler sees you and throws it wider.

That's why it looks like an ugly shot in the end. Young threw everything at it, so his momentum was all going towards the bowler.

It was a huge swipe from Will Young. He might have been feeling that they weren't making enough of the powerplay.

    Young c Buttler b Woakes 12 (New Zealand 18-1)

An early breakthrough for England and Chris Woakes!

A shorter delivery from Woakes, Young comes down the pitch and his attempted swat at the ball sees him edge it to give Buttler an easy catch.

Young looked like the settled batter of New Zealand's openers, so Henry Nicholls joins Conway, who is really struggling so far.

Thinking about New Zealand at the World Cup and their chances, it's almost as if someone has sat down and said, "New Zealand have got into the semi-finals at the World Cup far too often and that has to change".

The England game is like a shootout but then it gets worse. They've got some banana peels like Bangladesh and Afghanistan at Chennai, where it can be low and slow. Those two games will be quite tricky for New Zealand.

They have a chance, of course they have. I don't see New Zealand making the semi-finals, but equally they could make the final.

  8. NZ 16-0published at 4 overs

    Target 369

Topley is having some joy against Conway, who finds himself on just four off 14 balls right now.

He did manage one single, which was a thick edge, with Young also getting a single of his own off the one ball he faced in that over.

Woakes was a tad expensive in his last over and will hope to restrict Young more than he did in the third over.

It is important New Zealand don't lose wickets in these early overs. It calmed down a little after 10 overs in the England innings and became easier to bat.

  10. NZ 14-0published at 3 overs

    Target 369

Young ends the over with a tidy drive to the boundary, his second four in the over.

England won't want Young to get too settled, while Conway is still looking to really get going.

Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham are the key batters in this side. Glenn Phillips is more of a power player and comes into his own if the others have performed and set a base.

  12. NZ 10-0published at 2.3 overs

    Target 369

New Zealand bring up their first boundary, a strong pull shot from Young off Woakes races away for four.

The Black Caps are going to need many more of those to get anywhere near this 369 target.

It is a big total, despite New Zealand picking up late wickets. New Zealand will have to chase this in a different manner to how it was constructed by England.

  14. NZ 5-0published at 2 overs

    Target 369

Just three runs come off Topley's first over. Conway squirmed the last ball towards the on side boundary, but a good stop from Woakes means it is just two.

Woakes will now continue to bowl after that boundary save.

Devon Conway is having a lot of good luck at the moment. He's playing and missing, edging past leg stump, hitting just short of mid-wicket.

  16. NZ 3-0published at 1.4 overs

    Target 369

    Almost a wicket for Topley!

Conway just chips one up in the air and Malan catches, but the ball bounced just before he took it.

Conway has looked a bit nervy so far, helped by strong starts from both of England's opening bowlers.

Did it pitch outside leg? That is only difficulty for someone like Chris Woakes to a left-hander really.

It was a lovely over though. It was seam more than swing, that will come next.

  18. NZ 2-0published at 1 over

    Target 369

It is a start that both England and Chris Woakes will have wanted.

Just two comes from the over and that was via streaky singles from both Conway and Young.

The final ball was a beauty from Woakes that finds the pads of Conway, but it pitched just outside leg stump and England do not review.

  19. NZ 0-0published at 0.1 overs

    Target 369

We're back under way at The Oval.

Chris Woakes bowls the first ball to Devon Conway, who leaves it alone.

  20. Postpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 13 September 2023

Both teams are coming back out on to the field at The Oval.

A reminder that New Zealand are chasing 369 to win this match, a very good total set by England.

However, it could have been much more, with England's last five wickets falling for 20 runs and 11 balls short of the full 50 overs.
