It didn't look like Bess Heath was handed a cap in that England huddle so she will have to wait a little longer to make her debut.

We'll have confirmation of that at the toss. That's coming up any moment now...

Mahika Gaur isn't the only newcomer to the England squad hoping to make an impact against Sri Lanka...

Pulling up trees is nothing new for Bess Heath.

Coming from a family of tree surgeons, perhaps cutting down trees would be more accurate. However you want to phrase it, Heath's performances on the pitch are making people sit up and take notice.

England are in a huddle and Mahika Gaur has just received her cap from Kate Cross.

That's confirmation of one debutant for the home side tonight. Will we have another?

I must admit that I didn't expect such a prompt restart when I saw the scene at Hove about an hour ago.

Thankfully, the rain has stopped and we should get a good game in.

After a month of The Hundred, I'm sure the players can cope with the 102 balls per innings that we'll have tonight.

  7. Toss at 18:30 BSTpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 31 August 2023

And just like that, we've had word that the toss will take place at 18:30 BST.

That's a little under 20 minutes away. Fingers crossed it stays dry until then.

Play will start at 19:00 BST - 17 overs per side.

No official word just yet on a start time or even a further inspection.

The latest TV pictures from Hove suggested it had got a bit gloomier with some darker clouds overhead.

But given the ground staff are continuing to remove covers, they aren't too worried about that which is a good sign.

England are hoping to get a look at a couple of exciting young players during the series against Sri Lanka.

Not least 17-year-old left-arm seamer Mahika Gaur, who impressed for Manchester Originals in The Hundred.

She's was part of our England Next Gen series and you can read all about her here.

The umpires are out having a look at the playing surface and having a chat with the ground staff.

We'll bring you news from that inspection as soon as we get it.

It is still looking rather grim overhead at Hove but it has stopped raining.

In fact, the groundsheets either side of the covers are coming off!

For a full game, they will need to be playing by 18:35 BST.

  13. 'England can execute skills better'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 31 August 2023

England captain Heather Knight has challenged her side to use the T20 and one-day series' against Sri Lanka as an opportunity to refine their skillsets.

England won both white-ball series' against Australia in July and will be expected to beat Sri Lanka, who are eighth in the world in the two formats.

"In terms of skill execution we can be a lot better," Knight told BBC Sport.

"We weren't perfect in the Ashes, which is completely fine - you don't expect perfection.

"But we can continue to shift things forward, particularly in terms of the bowling and the skill execution at the end of the innings when batters are going. We've got a chance to improve that."

Latest news from Hove is that there will be another pitch inspection at 18:00 BST if there is no further rain.

    Fingers crossed!

  15. England women's match fees to equal men'spublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 31 August 2023

While we wait, there was some big news earlier in the week...

England women's match fees for internationals have been increased to equal the men's with immediate effect.

The change was recommended in the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report, which found discrimination is "widespread" in English and Welsh cricket.

It said women were paid 25% of men's fees for white-ball and 15% for Tests by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

England captain Heather Knight said the change was "fantastic to see".

As I'm sure you'll already have figured out, the rain means the toss has been delayed.

The ground staff are out there, though, and the clean up effort has started. There is still some very light rain but the umpires are out inspecting the pitch.

We'll see what comes of that.

In coming back to claim an unlikely draw against Australia earlier in the summer, Heather Knight's England showed the level they can reach.

They're back in action tonight and they're strong favourites too as they take on Sri Lanka.

England are hoping to get a look at some exciting young players across the series...

The bad news is that they may be forced to wait a while because the British summer is doing its thing and the covers are on at Hove.
