After the match at Headingley fell victim to the weather Zak Crawley will finally get his opportunity to captain England having been named skipper for this ODI series against Ireland.

Crawley has played 39 Tests for England but has not been part of a white-ball team who are world champions in both limited-overs format.

The Kent opening batter played three ODIs for England in 2021, when Ben Stokes led a hastily-assembled squad after many of the team's white-ball regulars were ruled out because of a Covid outbreak.

  5. England's batting soap opera...published at 10:54 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

I noticed a billboard the other day saying Neighbours is making a comeback. Well this week or so has been a bit of a soap opera for England.

Jason Roy was not due to play in this series against Ireland, then England skipper Jos Buttler said Roy might play after he might after he missed all four of their ODIs against New Zealand through injury.

Harry Brook was selected for the whole series, then withdrawn after he named in England's squad for the tournament in India ahead of 2019 World Cup winner Roy.

Roy then turned down the chance of featuring in the second and third ODI against the Irish.

Oh, and Joe Root was inked in to play the first ODI at Headingley to get some extra time in the middle, but despite that being abandoned without a ball being bowled he preferred to rest than play today at Trent Bridge or next Tuesday Bristol.

The knock-on affect of which has been Tom Kohler-Cadmore's call up to the squad. Although he's not been named in the team today.

  9. Welcome...published at 10:43 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

England have already named their 15-man squad for the World Cup in India which starts on 5 October so you might think there is not much riding on some late September ODIs against Ireland.

    Think again.

England selector Luke Wright has said rather than naming travelling reserves for the tournament he has told a cache of batters and bowlers to "keep ticking over" in case they need to be summoned to India at short notice.

Can someone make an impact in these next two matches against the Irish to ensure they are the next cab off the rank if there's an injury?

Welcome to live text commentary of the second ODI between England and Ireland from Trent Bridge.
