  1. Ire 150-6published at 25 overs

An interesting battle between Tom Hartley and Mark Adair comes to an end with honours even. Adair nearly chips Hartley to the fielder at mid-wicket, before slogging him square for four.

Surely England will close it out from here?

My colleague Ffion Wynne will see you through the rest of Ireland's chase.

In 99 times out of 100, a team won't win from the position Ireland are in.

  3. 6 runs

    Ire 144-6published at 24.2 overs

Mark Adair is the new batter and he ends the left-arm spinner's grip on the Irish batting, giving himself room and heaving the Lancashire man into the stands over mid-wicket.

Rehan Ahmed has done brilliantly. He doesn't really celebrate, it's bread and butter for him. It's a beauty.

Rehan Ahmed thinks he is a leg-break bowler but he's more of a googly bowler with a leg-break in him.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 23.5 overs

    McBrine b Rehan Ahmed 4 (Ire 137-6)

Rehan Ahmed with a handy piece of bowling from round the wicket to account for Andy McBrine.

The Leicestershire leggie lands his googly on a sixpence and McBrine plays down the wrong line, pushing forward. The ball spins away, beats the Irishman's bat, and lights up the bails as it strikes the top of off stump.

Lovely piece of work from the spinner.

  7. Ire 136-5published at 23 overs

Tom Hartley has a nice rhythmical action. Doesn't appear to get flustered, either.

There's not a whole lot of variation but he's tying down an end nicely here. With all due respect to Ireland, you wonder if there was a step up in class in terms of the opposition how he might fare. Five dots and a single in that over.

Anyway, here's that brilliant catch from Will Jacks from a little earlier.

That's a lovely, lovely shot for six from George Dockrell.

  10. 6 runs

    Ire 134-5published at 21.3 overs

George Dockrell is happy to play his shots against Rehan Ahmed and launches the leg-spinner back over his head for six.

The ball is temporarily lost under some covers below the Radcliffe Road End, prompting some, ahem, 'instructions' from the crowd on where it might be to the Nottinghamshire officials desperately scrambling around to find it.

  11. Who is Tom Hartley?published at 16:47 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Tom Hartley, one of four England debutants today, is a left-arm spinner whose strengths are containment and accuracy.

The son of former international 400m runner Bill Hartley, he climbed through the ranks at Lancashire's age group teams while cutting his teeth in the Liverpool Competition.

No relation to former England women's spinner, BBC TMS pundit and fellow Lancastrian Alex.

  12. Ire 128-5published at 21 overs

Left-arm spinner Tom Hartley is wheeling away and building pressure from the Pavilion End. Andy McBrine works him round the corner for three, but the Lancashire man offers him precious little else to work with.

Hartley has 0-8 from three overs.

Ireland's run-rate has significantly slowed once England started taking wickets. The hosts' game to lose now?

A terrific run back and catch from Will Jacks. Super catch.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 19.2 overs

    Tector c Jacks b Ahmed 39 (Ire 121-4)

Rehan Ahmed bags his first wicket of the day, and it comes via brilliant catch from Will Jacks.

Harry Tector attempts to go downtown again, but this time fails to get the distance needed. Jacks turns on his heels at mid-off and hot foots it before diving forward to get under the ball before it touches the turf.

    Superb from Jacks.

It is just Tom Hartley's fourth ever 50-over cricket match and his first ever in England. The other three were all in Sri Lanka.

  18. Ire 121-4published at 19 overs

Tom Hartley rattles through another over of dependable defensive left-arm spin. Two singles off it. He's winning the economy battle at the moment.

It's forcing the batters to take on leggie Rehan Ahmed which will doubtless create chances.

Such a good shot and it is the right shot. It could go wrong. If you are batting against a spinner and mid-on and mid-off are inside the circle, you have to go for it.

  20. Ire 119-4published at 18 overs

George Dockrell takes a shine to Rehan Ahmed and dispatches him down the ground for back-to-back boundaries to kickstart Ireland's innings after a quiet few overs.

A bit too much flight from the Leicestershire spinner and Dockrell is confident enough to go after it.
