Buttler through the covers again, this time off Henry. An under-rated cover-driver, Buttler. Not just a piano mover, also a piano player.

John Petrie: I don't know why people ever doubt Joe Root. Showing in the first match of the World Cup exactly why he is a permanent fixture in the team.

  3. Eng 173-4published at 31.3 overs

Eighteen overs to go after this one. Boult will bowl out, Henry too. Neesham might have to, Santner probably will. Then what? Need three from Ravindra and Phillips, possibly Daryl Mitchell.

It's just pure timing from Jos Buttler. Nothing more than a push.

  5. Eng 171-4published at 31 overs

    Root 51, Buttler 34

Thank you, Samuel. Nicely poised, this. England with the chance to get a biggie, New Zealand a couple of wickets away from blowing it wide open. Jimmy Neesham, with hair miles too perfect considering the stifling heat, is bowling his trundlers. Jos Buttler plays a beautiful cover drive for four. Hang it in The Louvre.

  6. Eng 166-4published at 30 overs

Much better over from Trent Boult with just that one single from it but England have got two set batters at the crease now.

It should make for an exciting last 20 overs and to take you through it, it's over to Stephan Shemilt.

  7. 50 runs

50 for Joe Rootpublished at 29.4 overs

    Eng 166-4

Joe Root reaches his half-century from 57 balls - a 37th in ODIs - with a single clipped to deep backward square.

It's been a controlled innings from the Yorkshireman, allowing others to bat around him.

  8. Eng 165-4published at 29 overs

Good ball to finish from Jimmy Neesham, getting a hint of movement back in to Jos Buttler, who is forced to defend.

It's 10 from the over, though, and England look ready to kick things up a notch now.

Jos Buttler emerged to the biggest cheer of the day. There are plenty of replica shirts with his name on the back here too.

He's a popular man in India for his IPL exploits.

The noise levels go up again each time he pumps one of these sixes down the ground too.

Jimmy Neesham was expensive in his first spell - and this won't help his figures!

Too full and Jos Buttler hammers the ball back down the ground for six. The England skipper is starting to motor...

I sat outside and lasted for three minutes. It was very, very hot. It made me glad that I'm retired and don't have to go out there to bowl.

  12. Eng 155-4published at 28 overs

Trent Boult took a bit of tap earlier in the innings but the New Zealand left-armer is back to try and break this important stand between Jos Buttler and Joe Root.

No such look for the Black Caps on that front as England take five from the over with Buttler, who looks to be getting into his stride, getting two with a crisp cover drive.

Moeen Ali was the fourth England wicket to fall, bowled by a ball that skidded on from Glenn Phillips...

My one worry about this England team is that they seem to lose wickets too frequently. They got away with not completing the 50 overs in the summer, but don't think they will in the World Cup.

    Henry, London

  15. Eng 150-4published at 27 overs

Jos Buttler cuts the next ball through backward point for a couple and nearly gets four with the same shot last ball.

The fielder at short third dives to make the stop, though, and keeps it to a single. That brings up the 150 for England.

  16. 6 runs

    Eng 145-4published at 26.2 overs

Tossed up by Rachin Ravindra and Jos Buttler thumps it back over his head for six!

Excellent clean hitting from the England skipper, just as we've come to expect.

It looks like a good surface, but it is just dusting up slightly, suggesting the spinners will be hard to hit. Under lights, with the dew, it might be easier for batting. It's important England can get to 300-320.

  18. Eng 139-4published at 26 overs

England keep the fielder sweeping out on the off side boundary busy, pushing the ball either side of him to take four singles from Mitchell Santner's over.

  19. Eng 135-4published at 25 overs

A better over for England thanks to that boundary, seven from it, as we reach the halfway stage of the innings.

Still pretty evenly poised but New Zealand, with those four wickets, may be the happier of the sides.

  20. Eng 134-4published at 24.3 overs

Loose delivery from Rachin Ravindra, drifting down leg and Joe Root sweeps it fine... four runs!

Very well played, past short fine leg and all the way along the ground. That takes him into the 40s.
