I don't think New Zealand can believe their luck here.

A World Cup opener, with only two specialist seamers and one frontline spinner. They will be absolutely delighted and really believing now.

So many England batters have got starts, and got themselves out.

Joe Root has done so much of the hard work and he would have desperately wanted to be there at the end of the 50th over.

His wicket has come off the bowler you would never have expected. You can see the disappointment in Root's face.

  3. Eng 231-7published at 41.3 overs

It actually went between Root's legs. England are going to get bowled out by a patched up New Zealand attack. Chris Woakes is the new man.

Glenn Phillips has bowled seven balls, as a part-time spinner, and he has got two prized wickets.

This one is huge, and again it's come at such a crucial time. There are still nine overs to bat!

    Root b Phillips 77 (Eng 229-7)

Not good. Not good at all.

Glenn Phillips had only six ODI wickets before today, now he has Moeen Ali and Joe Root is just seven balls.

Root tries the reverse - no issue with that - but it's the wrong length for the shot. Too full, under the bat and on to the stumps. Root leaves shaking his head, despite making a lovely 77. New Zealand are cockahoop.

Sean Richard: England seem to have lost some of that ruthlessness they had under Morgan in ODI cricket. When they got on top, they completely dominated. Too often now the batters get starts then fall. Saying that, still on for 300+ which is more than competitive.

    Ravindra 9-0-72-1

The issue with losing those wickets is that England can't afford to pressure the likes of Ravindra, who is bowling now. Singles the order of the day. Five of them.

SCurran, remember, is the most expensive player in IPL history. It looks like he has spent some money on his cricket boots. A very smart blue pair. Snazzy. England have got some work to do in the last 10.

Tom Latham brought Trent Boult back on to get a wicket and he does the job for his captain.

He is a very popular player and a fantastic bowler.

You could see that Joe Root was quite disappointed there. It is such a significant time to lose a wicket because now, the bowlers are coming in to do the really important stage of batting.

We know that Curran and Woakes can certainly bat but it will be a test.

  12. Eng 221-6published at 39 overs

Sam Curran is the new man. England bat long, still Woakes and Rashid to come, and someone is going to have to support Root.

There it is! We were calling that something might happen after four dots, and it does.

That pressure was certainly in the mind of Liam Livingstone. It's another half-hearted shot from an England batter.

From England's point of view, it's another hiccup because a new batter has got to come in at a crucial stage. Trent Boult gets the job done, just what his captain asked for.

Another good bowling change from the Kiwis brings the wicket.

Liam Livingstone was tied down and simply chipped the ball to Matt Henry at long-on.

Never mind who bowls at the end of the innings. England might not get there.

Four dot balls. Will it draw something out of the ordinary from Livingstone?

  16. Eng 221-5published at 38.4 overs

Now Trent Boult is back, haring in round the wicket. This is his eighth over, so only two left after this. Four dots in a row to Livingstone.

The wicket is playing really well and I think it's going to stay that way throughout the rest of the day and evening.

Both captains were confident in wanting to bowl first which is usually an indicator of a good pitch that won't deteriorate much.

  18. Eng 221-5published at 38 overs

New Zealand are shuffling the pack. Jimmy Neesham rumbles in for some more meds. Neesham bowling gives me the chance to say a tie in any game, even the group stage, means a super over. If a super over is tied, we keep going until we find a winner. All night if we have to. Nice from Livingstone, opening the face to get four past short third.

Since the last World Cup, New Zealand have been struggling to fill a couple of spots.

The first is the Ross Taylor solidity at number four, and the second is the genuine all-rounder role of Colin de Grandhomme.

  20. Eng 214-5published at 37 overs

Livingstone definitely less happy against the pace than the spin. Matt Henry has got through eight overs for figures of 2-39. Outstanding on such a sweltering day.
