  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.5 overs

    Bairstow c Mitchell b Santner 33 (Eng 64-2)

    From nowhere!

A soft dismissal as Jonny Bairstow, who was well-set, just chips one up towards long-off where Daryl Mitchell takes a decent sliding catch.

It looked like Bairstow was trying to aim to hit over cover, but just got it a little too straight.

Mitchell Santner pumps his fists in delight. Frustration for England and Bairstow.

This is a Joe Root that I haven't seen live - what a fantastic shot!

It's a shot that Joe Root will play when he's under pressure because he backs himself.

He stays so still and knows that when he connects, it's going to go all the way.

  4. 6 runs

    Eng 61-1published at 12 overs

    Bairstow 32, Root 13

And there's the Joe Root scoop that we've come to know and love!

He eyes up two balls from Trent Boult before whipping his third over his shoulder for six.

We've seen it so many times now but it's remarkable every single time. Boult just smiles wryly in response.

Re the monkey pic @10:09, I believe that is a Langur. I may be wrong but I think they are quite an aggressive species.

We're going to see some teams punished for slow over rate in this World Cup. In this heat, the spinners are going to have a job to get through their overs quickly as well as being economical.

  7. Eng 54-1published at 11 overs

Steady as ever from Mitchell Santner - just the three singles from his over.

He whizzes through his overs too, which is good for the over-rate but not particularly helpful for the poor seamers who barely get any respite at the other end.

And here is that wicket of Dawid Malan.

We know he's in very good form, having scored heaps of runs against this opposition last month, but he didn't quite get going today.

Just a slightly fuller delivery from Henry and Bairstow is onto it in a flash outside off stump. Nothing wrong with the line if the ball was shorter but once it was fuller, Bairstow could capitalise.

  10. Eng 51-1published at 10 overs

    Bairstow 31, Root 4

Jonny Bairstow completes the opening powerplay in style, driving Matt Henry straight down the ground for four more.

Frustration for Henry, whose first five balls had conceded just a single.

You'd probably say England are still in control despite the loss of Malan, but New Zealand haven't let it get away from them, either.

  11. How's stat?!published at 10:12 British Summer Time 5 October 2023

Joe Root may have been going through a slump in form but he should enjoy starting his knock against spinner Mitch Santner here.

Root averages an excellent 68.43 against spin in ODIs.

  12. Eng 46-1published at 9 overs

Another solid over from Mitch Santner, just the five runs and no boundaries from it.

The Yorkshire duo of Bairstow and Root meet for a glove punch in the middle, and these two batting together always gives a sense of security, doesn't it?

    Monkey

Steve Finn has just mentioned the monkeys in our hotel courtyard yesterday. Here’s one of them. I’m sure someone out there can tell us the species.

England have been dragged back by Matt Henry. He's going to be a key man for New Zealand, he's a real wicket threat.

  15. Eng 41-1published at 8 overs

Dawid Malan may not have been at his best but one calm head replaces another as Joe Root strides to the middle.

He wasn't in the best of form in the series against New Zealand that preceded this, but he is still so important to England's middle order.

Dawid Malan looks angry and rightly so. He doesn't move his feet. There has been no foot movement from him all day.

It's the first shot in anger that Malan has actually played, he gets a tickle on it and goes through to the keeper.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7.4 overs

    Malan c Latham b Henry 14 (Eng 40-1)

    No mistake this time!

Matt Henry gets reward for his consistency this morning, although it's not with his best ball.

It's very wide and Dawid Malan can't resist having a flash at it, getting a thick edge through to the keeper.

He looks disappointed, but New Zealand are delighted with a breakthrough that they had to work very hard for.

  19. Eng 39-0published at 7 overs

    Oh! A drop?

Dawid Malan seems to get an edge on a quicker ball from Santner, and it goes so quickly through Latham's gloves.

We're yet to see a replay but that may be a big moment.
