I notice that the India support players are stopping the ball before it hits the boundary. I assume it is an attempt to preserve the ball condition as much as possible. Just wondering if that is within the rules?

Afghanistan were skittled out for just 156 in 37.2 overs against Bangladesh on Saturday. They are playing like they have a point to prove here, albeit on what looks like a much better pitch for batting.

Wow! That shows how good this pitch is.

The ball is maybe 40cm outside off stump and it is only waist height, so you can't say it is a bad ball.

Shardul Thakur is just trying to get into his work but you need to get into it super quick if you want to preserve your figures on a pitch like this.

Shardul Thakur is back in the India team today and now he is in the attack.

He drops one in a touch short but it just sits up nicely for Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who powers the ball cross-batted over mid-wicket for the first six of the match.

It is an unbelievable pitch when you get out there. There isn't much in there for the bowlers. It is going to be incredibly tough to defend on.

Here is the first wicket to fall as Jasprit Bumrah removed Ibrahim Zadran for 22, helped by some smart glovework by KL Rahul behind the stumps.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is certainly growing into this game after a watchful start. He is 14 from 18 deliveries, including three well-struck fours.

This is very true pitch. Fill your boots when you get in. Don't just make a hundred, make a big hundred.

This is a big opportunity for Afghanistan to bounce back from their first game against Bangladesh, when they were poor.

  9. Afg 42-1published at 9 overs

Lovely shot from Rahmanullah Gurbaz as he plays a cut off the back foot that races through backward point.

Hardik Pandya, complete with his usual headband, then beats Gurbaz's defences and smacks into his pads, though it was a strangled appeal it was likely sliding down leg.

Mohammed Siraj has been aggressive but it might be time to take him off.

  11. Afg 37-1published at 8 overs

    Ouch.

Mohammed Siraj bowls a nasty-looking bouncer that leaps up on Rahmat Shah, luckily Rahmat just manages to get the top of his bat up in time to fend the ball away from his helmet.

Rahmat shows now ill-effects from that delivery, clattering the final ball of the over through the covers for four.

Time for the first bowling change as Hardik Pandya enters the attack.

  12. Afg 32-1published at 7 overs

Rahmat Shah is the new batter and blocks out his first two balls from Jasprit Bumrah, who is 1-9 from his four overs so far.

    Brilliant bowling.

That is the Bumrah of old. He's able to move the ball move ways at high speed.

It has been a clinic of fast bowling from Bumrah and that is a just rewards for a sensational opening spell.

I loved the Marcus Rashford style celebration too.

    Ibrahim Zadran goes!

It is a wonderful teasing line just outside off stump from Jasprit Bumrah that snares a thin edge from Ibrahim and KL Rahul behind the stumps does the rest.

He thrashed at that a little bit, rather than letting the ball coming to him. The extra cover coming into play probably made him think he needed to hit it harder and it created the half-chance.

It was a difficult chance but those are the catches that change games.

  17. Afg 28-0published at 6 overs

Rahmanullah Gurbaz repeats the trick with the final ball of the over!

The delivery has a bit of an extra bounce so it is an uppish drive from Gurbaz, but the ball fizzes wide of the diving cover fielder before racing to the rope.

Would have been a worldie if the fielder pouched that one.

That shot was controlled again. Rahmanullah Gurbaz has really impressed me in the last 12 months with the control and composure he's added to his game. You used to think of him as a dasher.

    Lovely shot from Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

He has struggled for fluency so far but that was a beautifully measured cover drive that races away to the boundary.
