England will be delighted because Afghanistan looked on course for a really big score. It was the spinners who were key with 5-94 as they put the squeeze back on. England will be happy and confident of chasing down this total. If the dew comes down I think it will be curtains for Afghanistan. It's not an easy chase, but quite comfortable if the play Rashid Khan well.

A mixed bag for England's bowlers at the end of the Afghanistan's innings. They disappeared over the boundary but managed to pick up wickets.

  3. 'I enjoy challenge of bowling'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 15 October 2023

England all-rounder Liam Livingstone: "It looked like a good pitch first up, the reason we bowled first was we hope the dew with come in and make it even better for batting second time around.

"It held a little bit for the spin but all in all, I think it's a pretty good pitch and a pretty small ground as well.

"I just tried to keep the stumps in play as much as I could and vary my pace. Thankfully, it came out nice today.

"It's something I've worked pretty hard knowing what was coming up in this World Cup. Being a sixth bowler, sometimes you're not needed and sometimes you're thrown in at the deep end like today.

"It doesn't come as easily to me as batting but I enjoy the challenge of it."

Afghanistan's 284 is their second-highest score in a World Cup match. They fell just short of a new record, having scored 288 against West Indies in 2019 at Headingley.

England need 285 to win, then.

Liam Livingstone is just doing a flash interview on the sidelines. We'll have his thoughts imminently.

Buttler with the quick hands and the accurate throw brings the innings to an end.

    Naveen-ul-Haq run out (Buttler) 5 (Afg 284)

Two runs off the final over of Afghanistan's innings bowled by Reece Topley before it ends with a run out with a ball to spare.

A short ball from Topley brings a swish of the bat across the line from Fazalhaq Farooqi, but he is unable to make contact.

Naveen-ul-Haq calls him through, attempting to pinch a single to get himself on strike for the last ball, but England skipper Jos Buttler throws down the stumps at the striker's end.

  8. Afg 282-9published at 49 overs.

Mark Wood smiles, ruefully, as he collects his cap from the umpire after Naveen-ul-Haq swings wildly at the England seamer's final delivery and the ball flies away to the boundary through third for four.

More luck than skill involved in that shot.

One over to go. Reece Topley will bowl it. Here's how he was walloped to the boundary by Ikram Alikhil at little while ago.

Joe Root has taken four catches in this game, it is a joint record for England in a World Cup match. Chris Woakes took four at Edgbaston in the last World Cup.

An enterprising innings from Mujeeb, an impressive innings from him, but England have an opportunity to take the final wicket and limit the damage.

  11. wicket

    Mujeeb c Root b Wood 28 (Afg 277-9)

Mujeeb Ur Rahman's brutal slogging comes to an end as England claim two wickets in two balls.

The Afghanistan batter backs away to give himself some room but Mark Wood digs it into the pitch and a top edge flies high into the night sky.

Joe Root is ice cool, Mr Safe Hands, under the glare of the floodlights and takes the catch. Peerless in the field today. Sam Curran applauds, politely.

It drops safely into the hands of Curran and a fine innings comes to an end.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 48 overs

    Ikram c Curran b Topley 58 (Afg 277-8)

A filthy full toss from Reece Topley earlier in the over is called a no-ball, but the England left-arm seamer finishes the over with a wicket.

Ikram Alikhil wallops it down the ground and the ball seems destined to clear the ropes only to fade at the end and Sam Curran pouches a catch.

    A great knock by Ikram.

    Eng 270-7published at 47.2 overs

Ikram Alikhil brought up his half-century in that previous over.

The second ball of Reece Topley's over and Ikram plops himself down on one knee and hammers a huge slog sweep into the jubliant fans in the stands for six.

    That was a big 'un.

Think it's fair to say the quicks have struggled today. In hindsight Moeen for Curran probably would have been a better fit.

That is the benefit of swinging hard at the ball.

  17. Afg 263-7published at 47 overs

Mark Wood returns but Afghanistan are fearlessly swinging at everything from the England pace bowler.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman slices Wood's third ball over the top of wicketkeeper for four. Ikram Alikhil repeats the trick two balls later, but this time Reece Topley is able to save two runs on the boundary.

As a wise cricket sage at the bar of every club pavilion in the country would say: "If you're going to go, go hard."

  18. Afg 255-7published at 46 overs

A poor over from Sam Curran disappears for 18 runs.

Here's that stunning catch from Joe Root from moments ago.

Sam Curran is currently 0-46 off his four overs. They have gone for six, 20, two and 18. Consistently inconsistent.

  20. 6 runs

    Afg 253-7published at 45.4 overs

Sam Curran flicks the ball from hand to hand at the top of his mark between deliveries as he contemplates his vaiations.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, brandishing a sponsorless bat with an orange grip, waits for a short, wide slow one from Curran and heaves it across the line for four.

Next ball, Curran sends down a full toss and Mujeeb throws the kitchen sink at it to dispatch the ball to the boundary through point.

Worst still. It's a no-ball and a free hit. A short-pitched delivery from Curran is absolutely mullered square for six by Mujeeb on the pull.
