Dawid Malan was treading water a little bit there, but the passion Afghanistan are playing with, it's great. It is needed, the tournament is needed, as is an atmosphere in games.

  2. Eng 8-1published at 2.1 overs

    Target 285

Dawid Malan pushes the ball to the right of mid-off and calls for a quick single.

The shy at the stumps is just off target. A direct hit and that would've been very interesting.

  3. Eng 7-1published at 2 overs

    Target 285

Just the four from Fazal Farooqi's first over but, crucially, the wicket of Jonny Bairstow.

No matter what the batter thought of the decision - and you can see why he feels hard done to - the wicket stands and England need to be careful.

  4. Eng 7-1published at 1.2 overs

    Target 285

One Yorkshireman has left the fielding chuntering away to himself, replaced by another one.

Joe Root is that much more chipper as he tickles off his pads for four. Easy pickings to get England's number three up and running.

Jonny Bairstow has just given the umpires quite a glare on his way off there.

It was clipping but he does not like that decision.

That chair Gurbraz hit out at earlier might get another seeing too. The finger was raised, two umpires calls, the flicking of the leg stump and Baristow has given England the worst start possible.

Much like Steve Smith, Jonny Bairstow cannot believe that he is out.

    Bairstow lbw b Fazal 2 (Eng 3-1)

Just about clipping leg stump. Jonny Bairstow has to go and he is not happy about it.

Two umpire's call, for impact and hitting the stumps. Hitting is probably overstating it with the latter, it was barely brushing it.

But it was a good full ball from Fazal Farooqi, swinging back in to the right-hander and it stays with the on-field decision.

He has immediately gone straight up. Height I don't think will be an issue.

Huge appeal for lbw as Fazal strikes Jonny Bairstow on the front pad. And it's given!

The England man reviews immediately - I think this might be sliding down leg.

At one stage, England thought they will be chasing 385, not 285. They will take comfort in the fact that the ball has moved around a bit.

  12. Eng 3-0published at 1 over

    Target 285

Steady start all round. Three singles from Mujeeb Ur Rahman's over and both England openers are off the mark.

  13. Eng 1-0published at 0.2 overs

    Target 285

England are away as Jonny Bairstow pushes a single to mid-on.

    One down, 284 to go.

    Thanks, Tim.

England will be confident of getting the 285 runs they need for victory but they'll know this won't be easy.

Afghanistan's spinners have the potential to cause them problems and one of them, Mujeeb Ur Rahman will open the bowling.

  15. Postpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 15 October 2023

Right, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan are striding out. Afghanistan's players are in a huddle.

The wise words of Sam Drury will take you through the initial phase of England's chase.

England have to be ruthless picking their best team so when you come to Delhi when there isn't lateral movement for Sam Curran and Chris Woakes you might need to look at someone like Gus Atkinson for that extra pace.

England need an out & out wicket taker with X-Factor, leaking too many lower order runs. Either high pace or quality spin. With no Jofra Archer, it's got to be Gus Atkinson for Chris Woakes.

Chris Woakes' economy would be less of a concern if he had taken wickets, but he only has two in the tournament so far. He is not being the strike bowler England need. It's a lack of rhythm and lack of confidence. The ball just doesn't do enough in these conditions compared to England for him.

  19. Should Woakes be dropped?published at 13:37 British Summer Time 15 October 2023

A lot of debate about Chris Woakes' place in the team. We know he's a brilliant bowler in England, but finds it tougher in overseas conditions.

He finished with 0-41 off four overs today.

Thumbs up to keep him in the team for England's next game against South Africa on Saturday.

Thumbs down if you think he should be dropped.

Afghanistan came out of the blocks explosively, they stumbled and faltered in the middle and you were wondering if they could hold to build something at the back end. They're not ahead of the game, but they are in the game.
