All the moaners who piled in after eight overs are quiet. Not over yet of course but England have found a way through this so far.

It is a great catch from Joe Root. Rashid Khan comes down the pitch, looks to take on Adil Rashid down the on-side. No celebration, just a 'that's what I do.'

  3. wicket

    Khan c Root b Rashid 23 (Afg 233-7)

Brilliant stuff from Joe Root in the deep as he takes a screamer to dismiss the dangerous Rashid Khan at a crucial juncture.

Adil Rashid gives it a bit of flight and Rashid Khan takes the bait. He dances down the pitch and attempts to wallop it down the ground.

The ball fades in the air, however, and Root manages to get cover sound ground at deep long-on and dives full length to get his hands under it and cling on.

A double fist pump celebration from the England leggie.

Sam Curran is another bowler who has been expensive, but we know how good he can be at the death, he is a skiddy bowler. At this stage of the game, what you don't want is to give Rashid Khan pace on the ball to hammer towards the boundary.

Sam Curran, who has only bowled three overs so far, is brought into the attack. Tasked, no doubt, with delivering what is required from Jos Buttler at the back end of the Afghanistan's innings.

Curran outfoxes Ikram Alikhil with a slower ball before the Afghanistan batter slaps it high into the covers. That was more akin to a tennis stroke.

England doing well to squeeze the runs here.

I would love to see Rashid Khan bat a bit higher up the order.

A wry grin from bowler and batter as Rashid Khan fails to pick a googly from Adil Rashid and the Afghanistan batter is fortunate not to deflect it on to this stumps.

Ikram Alikhil clips the final ball of the England spinner's over through mid-wicket to keep the strike.

England's spinners today have gone for approximately four an over. England's seamers today have gone for around seven an over.

Afghanistan have won one in 17 at World Cups for a reason. They're a talented group of players but they can't put together 50 overs with the bat.

England's spinners have been magnificent. Rashid was excellent taking those two wickets and Livingstone bowling very well.

  10. Afg 227-6published at 42 overs

Reece Topley's mullet is flapping as he runs in to bowl. I've always thought he has the appearance of wrestler.

His first ball to Ikram Alikhil is cleverly steered to the boundary through third, though.

England will be looking at 240/250 from here, but ideally less. England have shown character, it was a tricky start and the pitch played well, but fought back with Rashid, Livingstone and Root.

Good to hear it, Matt. Most of the Afghans who live in India are based in Delhi so I'm sure that has boosted the crowd numbers at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium.

Adil Rashid's over is milked for five singles by Ikram Alikhil and Rashid Khan.

This is England’s first experience of what we thought atmospheres would be like at this World Cup. The New Zealand match was poorly attended while Dharamsala was a smaller ground. This is a big, loud crowd cheering every run off the bat of Rashid Khan.

Mark Wood is replaced by Adil Rashid, who has three overs left.

Here's how Wood got rid of Mohammad Nabi a little earlier with a classic piece of fast bowling.

Reece Topey, whose dad Don is in the crowd in Delhi watching on, will be relieved to his sn come through that over unscathed.

Ikram Alikhil opens the face to Topley jnr's fourth ball and picks up four runs.

Don, of course, played for Surrey and more famously so for Essex.

It is worth keeping our eye on Topley here and seeing how he moves here after that bang to the knee earlier on.

I don't think it will be long before England look at someone like Gus Atkinson. With some of these pitches, unless you've got that extra pace or bit of spin, you can get lined up.

  18. Afg 207-6published at 39 overs

Mark Wood has Ikram Alikhil and Rashid Khan on the back foot with his extra pace. The Afghanistan pair content with three runs off the over.

Left-arm seamer Reece Topley, more skill than speed, is tossed the ball by Jos Buttler. He had a knock on his knee while fielding a little earlier so this will test out whether there's any issues.

Mark Wood is here to clear out the tail. Tailenders generally don't like extra pace and mystery spin.

  20. ouch!

    Afg 205-6published at 38.3 overs

Mark Wood is cranking up the speed-o-meter.

Wood cracks Ikram Alikhil on the back of the shoulder with a brisk delivery which the Afghanistan batter almost ended up ducking into.

    On comes the physio.
