A lot of teams are using a spinner in the opening powerplay. Why doesn't Buttler take Woakes out of the firing line and give Root a go?

Sam Curran does manage to respond after that boundary first up and just two singles come from the next five.

    Some brief respite for England.

This is utter carnage at the moment. Reece Topley has started well but at the other end it has been leaky. Chris Woakes didn't execute what he wanted to. Afghanistan have put England under pressure, and every time the bowlers have missed they have been punished.

    Not yet.

Full from Sam Curran and Ibrahim Zadran drives elegantly through extra cover for four.

We're only in the seventh over but England's seamers are really under the pump.

Chris Woakes' opening spell is over. Sam Curran is coming on to replace him. Can the left-armer bring some control?

The i's Chris Stocks: Chris Woakes with the new ball cannot continue in this World Cup - he's been so poor these first three games. Starts this latest game v Afghanistan by conceding 31 off his first three overs.

Tom Sweeney: England need to get rid of Woakes… he’s in awful form. Very poor from Bairstow and Buttler too so far.

Arjun Singh: I love Woakes, but I really wish he’d believe he was at Lord’s rather than India when bowling. Absolute dross today.

The runs are flowing for Afghanistan and this time it's Reece Topley taking punishment.

Ibrahim Zadran slaps the first ball of the over through the off side for four and a few balls later, Rahmanullah Gurbaz cuts powerfully for four more.

It went in the air but was just out of reach of Joe Root as he dived to his left at point.

I'm a huge Woakes fan, and I don't buy into the idea that he's woeful overseas because the stats don't really back that up, but he's had a surprisingly poor tournament so far. We need him to improve to stand a chance in this WC.

It's 10 from the over in total and Chris Woakes has gone for 31 in his first three.

After starring in the Ashes, it has been a very tough start to the World Cup for the England seamer.

It's a great shot from Rahmanullah Gurbaz because you don't expect a wide yorker this early in the powerplay. Chris Woakes does not look happy. He doesn't know where he's bowling it at the moment. It's all a little bit erratic. It's a great start for Afghanistan.

Flayed over the covers for four. Dismissive stuff from Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Four more! There's swing for Chris Woakes but it provides width and Gurbaz just guides the ball through point.

    Woakes is really struggling.

  14. Afg 25-0published at 4 overs

Another wide adds to the untidy England start but otherwise it is a pretty steady over from Reece Topley.

Just four from it but Afghanistan will be very happy with the way this innings has begun.

Cricinfo's Matt Roller: England have sorted out the fonts of the fronts of their shirts for this afternoon's game in Delhi... but now there are two different fonts for the names and numbers on the back!

  17. Afg 21-0published at 3 overs

Ibrahim Zadran gets four with a punch through point after more untidy fielding.

In fairness to Jonny Bairstow, the guilty party on this occasion, the ball did appear to take an unusual bounce just before him.

Still, it's another expensive start from Chris Woakes.

That is a great shot from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Chris Woakes is a little too short on this pitch. If you bowl it there it will go a long way.

Too short from Chris Woakes and Rahmanullah Gurbaz is onto it in a flash.

Pulled high over deep mid-wicket for six!

The crowd is sparse but it will fill up later when the temperatures come down. There's precious little shade here.
