Azmatullah and Rahmat attempted a slow and steady rebuild, but their eventual dismissals ended any realistic hope of a Afghanistan recovery.

Afghanistan made a poor start to their reply as they slumped to 43-2 after 14 overs, with Mitchell Santner taking a stunning catch to dismiss Hashmat.

It could have been so much worse for New Zealand. Afghanistan's efforts in the field were marred by a series of dropped catches.

Latham and Phillips put on 144 for the fifth wicket, setting the platform for an explosive finish to the innings, with Mark Chapman also chipping in with 25 from 12.

But a flurry of wickets turned the tide of the innings and Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips came to the crease need to rebuild the New Zealand innings.

Put into bat, New Zealand started their innings well. Will Young passed 50, batting alongside Devon Conway and than Rachin Ravindra, as his side reached 109-1.

Let's have a quick look back at the best bits from today.

  9. Postpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 18 October 2023

New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "It was a pleasing start and a great performance. We were under pressure at times with the bat but the way we overcame that and put pressure back on them in the last 10 was outstanding.

"The bowlers then set the tone in the first 10 overs, we kept taking wickets and finished it off pretty quickly at the end."

On his partnership with Glenn Phillips: "We had lost three wickets for not very many so we both regrouped and built a partnership together. We took it nice and deep and were able to put our foot down a little bit. It was a fantastic innings from Glenn and it took the pressure off me a little bit."

On the bowling performance: "The seamers set the tone at the top, then Mitchell Santner came in to do his thing, with others chipping in to give us a bit of momentum. So pleasing all round."

On their next match against India: "We go there on the back of some very good performances. We have played some good cricket. We have another great challenge coming up in India and then Australia, but let's hope the momentum can continue."

Afghanistan captain Hashmat Shahidi: "Really disappointed because at this level you have to take those kind of catches. That hurt us, the team was doing good but becuase of that we feel a little bit down.

"Last six overs there were a lot of runs scored by the New Zealand team, but before that we dropped two catches, so that partnership goes on. We couldn't stop them but we tried our best and everything goes their way.

"You can't judge the pitch perfectly. I thought in the first innings it was spinning. We bowled well, it was the fielding that was a concern for us.

"Tonight will hurt us, but we still have more games to come. Next one is Pakistan, and we will talk about how we can improve and how we come back stronger."

Santner's struggled early on in the year, back end of last year - he had a few injuries. He's always felt like one of New Zealand's key bowlers, he's quite under-rated in terms of how he performs.

He's changed his technique so his elbows are a lot closer in his action and he comes in a lot taller and over the top. He's got a lot more spin in the last 18 months or so than he usually has, sometimes it surprises him!

Mitch Santner is just one of those players you would want in your side. Takes wickets and great catches, makes runs despite wearing glasses, looks chilled out. All-round good egg.

Player of the match Glenn Phillips on batting with Tom Latham: "Especially at Chennai with the pitch being a little bit more dusty and turny, it was really good how we went about things. We understood what we could possibly get off the last 10 overs and understanding that if we took a bit longer, one ball at a time, and combatting their best bowlers and taking what we could off them, we could let things go to the end and let our firepower do the trick.

"We thought if we could to get to the last six overs, the two of us could probably get 60 off it, with the power we had left to come. So if we can get to the 10-over mark with around 180 then we could at least get close. The way Chappie and Santner finished it off was absolutely brilliant. Maybe 250 or 260 would have been a par total, so to get a little more than that was very pleasing."

Player of the match Glenn Phillips: "The Afghanistan spinners are incredibly talented and strong and with losing a couple of wickets in the middle there the way me and Tommy [Latham] went about it was really pleasing. Our top order has done really well over the last couple of games, so to be tested in the middle is really good.

"We've got such a team first mentality, everyone's working for each other and thinking how can we make the best of the moments we're in. Understanding we've all got experience in different areas of the world, understanding what I can do for my mates and what he can do for me, just keep trusting each other."

That is a very efficient performance from New Zealand. They will have been wary after seeing what Afghanistan did to England at the weekend but never looked like being in trouble here, though things may have been trickier had Afghanistan held on to some of their catches.

    Here is the winning moment.

Things happened very quickly there as Afghanistan collapsed like a pack of cards.

I think Afghanistan have made the mistake of not batting first. It's so hot in Chennai, it felt like batting conditions. I don't know if I'm being traditional, but I think my bowlers would be furious. But there's such fear of dew.

Glenn Phillips, who top-scored with 71 to help anchor the New Zealand innings, is named player of the match. We will bring you what he had to say very shortly.

We shouldn't be surprised as Afghanistan have collapsed in every game in this tournament - they collapsed against England but still got the victory. About 50% of their runs are scored by their top three, as soon as you get two wickets against this side you know a collapse is around the corner.

Well, as Ron Burgundy would say, that escalated quickly.

Afghanistan lost their last five wickets for 14 runs in the space of four overs.
