Ikram Alikhil is the next man in and he gets off the mark with two down the ground from Boult's final delivery.

Rahmat then brings up the Afghanistan century, running two off Ravindra with a push into the covers. Ikram finishes off the over with a lovely drive past extra cover for four.

Azmat couldn't help himself playing at the short ball, though it was a very good short ball from Trent Boult.

It was half-decent partnership but it felt only a matter of time before they lost another wicket.

    Azmat c Latham b Boult 27 (Afg 97-4)

Well, that's what taking risks gets you.

Azmat clips behind to Latham off the returning Boult, trying to hit a shorter delivery.

They had to though, unless the intent was to bat out the innings to protect the run rate.

There were signs of impetus earlier in the over as Rahmat charged the New Zealand seamer, taking two from a mistimed shot, then took a risky single into the covers, with Santner scudding an under-arm throw just past the keeper's stumps.

Finally, Afghanistan. After wandering around the duty free they have finally found the Toblerone.

  5. Afg 94-3published at 25 overs

Hello, hello! What's all this - two fours in the over?

Azmat squeezes a lovely cut through backward point, beating the despairing dive of the fielder. Ravindra responds by fizzing a turning delivery past his bat, before the Afghanistan batter gets a thick edge attempting a drive and it flies to the boundary behind the keeper.

Fifty partnership as well - 51 off 68.

  6. Afg 82-3published at 24 overs

Three singles off Phillips, see below.

The required run-rate is now double the current rate - 7.96 to 3.41.

  7. Afg 79-3published at 23 overs

Azmat tries a big swing across the line and a top edge balloons over the head of wicketkeeper Tom Latham for two.

We're up at six overs without a boundary.

There's a lot of records to be broken if Afghanistan are going to win this match. And at the minute it doesn't look like they are even trying.

  9. Afg 74-3published at 22 overs

Middle overs. Spinner (Glenn Phillips) bowling. Three singles.

As Matthew McConaughey said in True Detective, "time is a flat circle".

We're destined to witness the same thing over and over again.

  10. Afg 71-3published at 21 overs

And here's the sixth bowler as Rachin Ravindra appears in place of Santner.

The Afghanistan batters ease three singles out to deep fielders.

There's not a vast amount happening in this match.

  12. Afg 68-3published at 20 overs

A first sight of Glenn Phillips - he has the air of the part-time bowler, but he's New Zealand's fifth option here. They've stacked their batting line-up.

Afghanistan work him around for seven runs, which is the highest score from an over in a while.

  13. Afg 61-3published at 19 overs

Again, a couple of singles off Santner's over. I suspect I'll be writing that a lot in the coming overs.

New Zealand will be perfectly happy with the rate, although no doubt they'd savour getting out of the oppressive Chennai heat.

While we take a break, why not enjoy every angle of that spectacular Santner catch?

    Target 289

A hefty four from Rahmat, pulling Santner to the ropes over mid-wicket.

We'll take drinks and there's a cameraman riding shotgun in the big novelty refreshments truck. Something to do, I suppose.

Rahmat brings up the Afghanistan half century, pushing a full delivery from Ferguson into the covers. Ravindra doesn't pick it up cleanly and the batter run two.

Afghanistan are going nowhere and they are going there quite slowly.

  18. NZ 48-3published at 15 overs

Azmat Omarzai is next in for Afghanistan. He made 62 against India earlier in the tournament, but the man he was batting with that day has just departed.

Rahmat takes two down to third, before Azmat gets off the mark with a push down to the long-off fielder.

Every I time I see that catch it gets better. That is absolutely outrageous.
