    Gurbaz b Henry 11 (Afg 27-1)

    Matt Henry fights back!

Full, straight and swinging in past the in-form Rahmanullah Gurbaz's defences. The stumps are splattered and Henry wins the battle after being thumped for six.

A big blow for Afghanistan's hopes.

That is a top shot! The TV replay showed a look of amazement on Glenn Phillips' face. New Zealand's deep fielders are conventional at third man and fine leg so it's a relatively safe shot if you've get enough on it, and he got plenty.

  3. 6 runs

    Afg 25-0published at 5.2 overs

Hello! Where has that come from?!

Full delivery from Matt Henry and Rahmanullah Gurbaz launches it straight back over his head for six!

    Glorious shot.

By my calculations, Afghanistan would be looking at a target of around 190 rather than 288 if they'd held onto all their catches. I'm sure there's a saying about catches, matches and winning but I can't quite recall what...

    Target 289

Oooh, lucky! Ibrahim Zadran gets a thick edge past the stumps and all the way down to the fine leg boundary.

The runs aren't flowing yet but Afghanistan are hanging in there, and will give themselves a great chance if they can keep that wickets column unharmed.

If they're going to win this then Afghanistan will have to get used to playing off the back foot. Once the ball stops moving they'll be bowling short. Play the hook shot, the pull shot.

  7. Afg 13-0published at 4 overs

    Target 289

Matt Henry corrects himself, with just a single coming from the remaining four balls.

I'll be honest, I didn't have particularly high hopes for New Zealand before this tournament started. But now, whenever I watch them play, I question whether I know anything about cricket at all.

They are a very, very good side.

    That'll help, though!

A rare gift from Matt Henry, dropping short and wide, and Ibrahim Zadran gratefully whacks it past point for four.

  9. Afg 8-0published at 3 overs

    Target 289

This is going to be a tough chase for Afghanistan if Boult and Henry keep this up.

Pace, bounce and swing continues to deceive, and only singles are manageable right now.

Quite the contrast to Gurbaz's dynamic display against England a few days ago.

Matt Henry with plenty of swing to pin Gurbaz on the front pad once more, drawing a big appeal.

Perhaps influenced by that wasted one earlier, New Zealand opt against the review - but it was probably going down the leg side anyway.

A probing, accurate over from the Black Caps seamer.

Gurbaz gets the first run off the bat from the final ball to end an eventful opening over.

That's a shocking review! If they need another one in the later part of the innings they're in trouble.

  13. Not outpublished at 0.5 overs

A waste of a review. The ball has pitched a long way outside leg stump.

  14. New Zealand reviewpublished at 0.5 overs

    Quite the start!

Trent Boult gifts two wides, before pinning Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the pad. It's given not out, but New Zealand want another look.

Afghanistan achieved a very unlikely win against England just a couple of days ago, and during that victory posted their highest World Cup score of 284.

They'll have bat very well to go a little bit further today to earn their second win of the tournament.

Here is New Zealand's Trent Boult with the opening over. This'll be challenge for Afghanistan openers Gurbaz and Zadran.

New Zealand batter Will Young: "We found it quite a tricky wicket to assess what a good score is, obviously their spinners bowled really well and put us under pressure in the middle.

"But the way the boys finished it off there was brilliant.

"The way they [Phillips and Latham] soaked up the pressure initially and then got to a stage where they felt like they could go, they timed it brilliantly.

"I was pleased with a half-century but I want more. My role is to give us a platform to launch from. I'd like to have taken it deeper but it was nice to contribute.

"I'm taking it day by day. It's not nice being left out, with me being in and out of the side at times, but my job is always the same and that is to try and win games for New Zealand."

Naveen-ul-Haq rescued Afghanistan somewhat, getting rid of both Phillips and Latham in a fantastic 48th over.

But Mark Chapman's cameo once again swung the game back to New Zealand, who take the momentum into the second innings.

A partnership of 144 between captain Tom Latham, who made 68, and Glenn Phillips' 71 changed the game.

Afghanistan bowled brilliantly, reducing them from 109-1 to 110-4 before the duo came together.

Very much a sense of what could've been, had they held on to their chances.

    Thanks, Tom.

A competitive score for the Black Caps and a huge missed opportunity for Afghanistan.

New Zealand ended that innings strongly, though they may feel they have left a few runs out there.

However, it could have been a lot worse had Afghanistan held on to some of their catches.

After all that excitement it is time for me to take a break. I will leave you in the capable hands of Ffion Wynne.
