It's very hot and muggy here in Mumbai so it's not surprising to see David Willey down struggling. It's not so much the heat but the mugginess which gets you.

  2. SA 239-4published at 36 overs

A glorious cover drive from David Miller sends a few shudders into the England camp but thankfully, Ben Stokes is at mid-off to somehow restrict it so a single.

There's no retrieving the last ball, though. A flashing edge from Klaasen races down to deep third for four more.

Oh, and just to make things a little worse, David Willey is helped off the pitch with what looks like nasty cramp.

  3. SA 234-4published at 35.2 overs

    Bit of optimism, folks?!

    The pitch is a belter.

Wood and Woakes... whichever wicket ... woeful... wasteful... Why oh why???

    John in Devon

Fair to say Mark Wood is having a Chris Woakes level disaster of a world Cup this far.

    Ian

Mark Wood has no other thought than to run in and try to bowl fast... incredibly poor

A big shot from Aiden Markram and it wasn't a straightforward catch but Jonny Bairstow held on inside the rope. He fell back and just stayed inside it. It's a bonus wicket for England and Bairstow gives a double fist celebration.

    Markram c Bairstow b Topley 42 (SA 233-4)

    Immediate impact!

Topley gets the breakthrough but it's a stunning take on the boundary from Jonny Bairstow. It's not a great delivery as Markram flicks at a ball on leg stump, but can't get the distance.

Bairstow tumbles on the square leg boundary, managing to hold on and avoids clipping the ropes with his feet as he falls.

A big wicket at a crucial moment. Markram was playing beautifully and setting himself for a big finish.

Reece Topley has a lot of tape on his finger and it will be interesting to see if the umpires or the South Africa batters have any issue with that. You can grip it better with the tape. It is quite evident he injured his finger so hopefully nobody takes an issue with that.

Generally you tape like that when there is a fracture or hairline fracture, which is a worry for England. Credit to him for coming out to bowl again. He's probably had an injection or some pain killers.

    Big moment here.

Reece Topley is back after taking a nasty blow to the finger in his opening spell.

Said finger is very heavily strapped up, so that might make things harder still.

David Willey recovers things somewhat, with just five from his over.

Markram and Klaasen look like they are just setting themselves up for some death overs fireworks at this stage.

A breakthrough is needed rather imminently from England's point of view.

This has been a very different approach from England with the selection of their side. They normally bat all the way down but with David Willey coming in at seven it's a longer tail than normal. You would still back their top six to get runs on this pitch, though.

Mark Wood has gone for 53 off five overs. He went for 55 off his first five overs against New Zealand.

  13. SA 222-3published at 33 overs

    14 from the over.

Plenty for Jos Buttler to think about.

It is absolutely baking out there. Bowling does not look enjoyable.

    Hmmm.

Problems for Mark Wood and problems for England.

A shorter delivery is pummelled to the fence by Henrich Klaasen this time.

  15. Postpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Markram and Klaasen have got a decent platform to work with as South Africa build nicely towards the last 10 overs.

That is largely down to the efforts of Reeza Hendricks, who played beautifully for his 85 - especially considering he's been sat on the bench throughout the tournament so far.

Mark Wood is having a difficult day. He's running in giving it everything but the quicker it comes down, the quicker it goes to the boundary at the moment.

  17. SA 212-3published at 32.1 overs

Mark Wood, with a menacing but determined scowl on his face, steams in with the first ball after drinks.

I'm not sure a leg stump half-volley that Aiden Markram can help on its way for four is what he intended, though.

There was some optimism and focus on the cricket in South Africa before the defeat to the Netherlands but back home most of the focus is on the rugby team and the Springboks at the moment. The rugby World Cup semi-final against England starts at half past midnight here so it could be a late one.

  20. drinks break

    SA 208-3published at 32 overs

Aiden Markram's shirt is quite literally clinging to his body with sweat. He gives his helmet a squeeze to extract some of the moisture from there, too.

Isn't that a lovely image for you?

Anyway, two wides and four singles from David Willey's latest over takes the players to a much-needed drinks break.
