England coach Matthew Mott to Sky Sports: "I can't lie, that was a hard night for us. It was a fantastic cricket wicket, and we looked at the ground stats that told us it's a good ground to chase on.

"On reflection, the heat was more than we bargained for. We were actually in control of the powerplay early on but it just spiralled out of control after that.

"They got at least 60 or 70 over par in the end.

"Hindsight is great. But we went out there to do a job and we set about that really well to begin with. The last 10 overs spiralled, they had two set batters in and they were class.

"We got the first five wickets, done the bulk of the work with their top order, and at that point we could have been chasing around 300 which would have been very achievable.

"We looked at our match-ups with South Africa and we wanted to go pace-heavy. We thought that was our best way of taking 10 wickets.

"We will definitely reflect on those changes but I don't think that was the difference between the teams today. We were thoroughly outplayed and they engineered the conditions perfectly.

"It was as tough as you can get. We are hurting and it is hard to chat about a game like that because we were not in the race after the first 25 overs."

England fought back pretty well with the ball after the stunning efforts from Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen to lay a platform.

They got rid of a set Aiden Markram on 42 and David Miller for five, leaving a lot of pressure on Heinrich Klaasen.

Jos Buttler's men had a big opportunity to claw back control but instead, Klaasen and Jansen ran riot and propelled South Africa to 399.

Reece Topley's finger injury left Jos Buttler in a pickle, David Willey struggled with cramp and while Adil Rashid was as reliable as ever, he was struggling with a stomach bug.

Let's hear what England coach Matthew Mott has to say about the performance.

The toss debate is one thing, the team selection is another that is going to dominate the post-match discussion.

England had started the tournament with three all-rounders - Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali.

And for this must-win (essentially) game, all three missed out.

It was a savage introduction to the World Cup for David Willey, Mark Wood was expensive and Gus Atkinson started poorly before dragging his figures back at the end.

It was sweltering hot, sweat was dripping through players' clothes and so many bowlers had to go off the pitch to get treatment.

Matthew Mott, speaking to Sky Sports, confirms some pretty big news from an England point of view.

The early diagnosis of Reece Topley's injury is that his finger is broken, and they are just waiting on a scan to confirm it. That is extremely unlucky for Topley, whose run with injuries has been rather brutal.

Mott also confirms that Jofra Archer is not available for selection, and he will not play at any point during the World Cup. So if England need to replace Topley in the squad, they'll have to fly somebody over.

  6. 'Great way to bounce back'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

South Africa stand-in captain Aiden Markram: "A fantastic all-round performance from us. A great way to bounce back from the defeat to Netherlands so to put a game like this together is great. You couldn't have asked for bigger efforts and the skills on top of those efforts, too. I cannot fault the boys tonight. We know England do like chasing but as I said at the start we would have batted first.

"Having worked out the way it did it helped us that our big quick bowlers were not out in the sun cooking. Reeza Hendricks produced a great knock. It's not nice hearing in the warm-ups you are going to play. He's someone who has been around for a while and really pleased he got a score.

"Heinrich Klaasen is a great number five and David Miller at six is a pretty destructive pair. He's come a long way and great to see him showcase his ability and to do that a global stage is massive for him.

"Marco Jansen is having a a great comp. He takes pride in his batting and prepares for a worst case scenario. He has a lot of ability with the bat and it's a nice score from him when we were in a bit of trouble.

"Good luck to the Springboks tonight! A massive game for them."

I think the biggest change today for England was the balance of the team. England, the side that got them to No.1 in the World, was the batting in the lower order to allow the top order more freedom. Adil Rashid batted at No.8 today, no Woakes, no Curran and that is probably the highest Rashid has batted in an ODI for eight years. England were made to pay for it.

  8. 'The toss was potentially a mistake'published at 16:28 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

England captain Jos Buttler: "Incredibly disappointing. We came here with high hopes, we wanted to play our best cricket but we were well short of that and really well beaten in the end.

"A lot of things didn't go to plan in our first innings. We started nicely and then Reece picked up that injury and we were in the unknown a little bit about whether he would come back, so had to fiddle with the overs slightly.

"A couple of our guys struggled with the heat, they fought really hard and put in a lot of effort. I thought if we could restrict them to around 340-50 on this pitch, it would be a good chase for us but they got away from us in the end."

Was the decision at the toss a mistake?

"Yes, potentially. You always look back and reflect on these decisions. It was obviously incredibly tough out there in the heat, and you could see that. Everyone put in a great shift, I still believe that 340 was achievable if we got off to a good start with the bat but yeah, potentially we should've batted first in this heat.

"Those conditions were definitely tough. The humidity and the cramps, it was a real challenge to contend with."

    Did that affect the batting?

"Again, potentially. Chasing a score like that you've obviously got to get off to a good start and the ball did a bit, and then there were a couple of dismissals like the caught at leg slip and caught down the leg side. When those things start happening, it feels like the writing is on the wall."

    What next?

"It leaves us with no room for error. We probably have to win every other game we play from here on, and that's the situation we're in."

To me, this team does not look like a World Cup-winning team. There are too many gaps, too many holes. This is the end of an era of what has been a great team.

So, that's South Africa's brilliance, particularly given their previous shock defeat by the Netherlands.

Where did it go wrong for England? And what's next?

We shall hear from Jos Buttler shortly.

  11. 'My best ever hundred'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Player of the match Heinrich Klaasen: "That hundred is up there with my best ever. The conditions were brutal so it will go down as one of my best ever.

"It's proper heat and saps the energy out of you. It was a case of not running your ones too hard because you needed to save energy in the heat. It really just saps it out of you.

"Myself and Marco Jansen just tried to hang on in there because England's players looked under the pump. Back-to-back wickets got them back in but we hung on and they were physically under the pump. That award should go to Marco too because he kept me going to go on and get the hundred.

"The defeat to the Netherlands was a tough loss but one defeat does not make a bad team. This was a fantastic performance."

I didn't mind England's decision at the toss. You thought their best way of winning the game was with the new ball, taking top order wickets and limiting South Africa's batting and then bat under the lights. They took the early wicket of Quinton de Kock and looked like they may have a chance.

  13. Postpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

In his post-match interview, Klaasen says his award should be going to Marco Jansen, who made 75 off 42 balls from number seven in a match-winning stand between the pair.

He took 2-35 in England's collapse, too.

  14. Postpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Toss debate aside, Heinrich Klaasen was absolutely incredible and deserves all the credit, particularly given how exhausted he was out there.

He is - to nobody's surprise - named player of the match for his incredible 109 from 67 balls.

  15. Postpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Well, where do we start with the debrief?

Jos Buttler's call after winning the toss will certainly dominate much of the discussion.

He opted to bowl first in sweltering conditions and England's bowlers wilted.

It's not over for England's World Cup hopes yet but they have taken quite the battering.

It is England's heaviest ODI defeat ever.

That is an absolute roasting, a thrashing and it puts England's World Cup hopes in the hands of everyone else, miracles upon miracles. It is a sad, sorry looking Jos Buttler. South Africa have had an absolutely rip-roaring day.

Gus Atkinson is bowled by Keshav Maharaj, and that is an absolute mauling.

Despite that entertainment at the end from Mark Wood and Atkinson, the contest was already over.

Reece Topley's finger injury that he sustained while bowling means he couldn't bat, so England's innings comes to an end at nine wickets down.

Oh, is this a bit of magic from Rassie van der Dussen?

It looks certain to be another Mark Wood six but Van der Dussen leaps full-stretch at long-on, and palms the ball in one-handed and saves the boundary.

    Great athleticism.
