A complete lack of preparation for this tournament, exemplified by Stokes trying to find form in the middle of a vital world cup match! Most of the squad have hardly played any day long cricket in the last 2 to 3 months. It shows.

That one has bounced like Joel Garner has bowled it from that end, it really has taken off to take the shoulder of the bat.
It could have gone anywhere.
Eeesh, that could have been another! Rajitha's delivery skews off the top of David Willey's bat and loops into the air around short third. There's a fielder nearby but not close enough - a let off.
Stokes then fires a four through the covers for the first boundary in five overs. The players will take drinks.

Angelo Mathews is bowling like prime McGrath here, he's nipping the ball all over the place!

I thought the 3rd umpire had to be 100% sure the catch was taken cleanly & any doubt, the benefit given to the batter. Must have changed the rules.

Stokes take a leg-bye to point before David Willey sees out five dot balls.
Figures of 2-14 off five for Matthews - remember he's not bowled in an ODI since March 2020.

One implosion after another has been the story of England's World Cup. Is it unrealistic to expect to have three good cricket squads? Tricky balancing act for the ECB to manage!

Ben Stokes has the start, he has the platform. He's regularly losing partners at the other end so he has to use his nous, his game instinct to try and get England up to something they can try to defend.

What has happened to benefit of the doubt in decisions? It seems to have disappeared in a strive to give fielding teams the advantage now?

New batter David Willey blocks out the final ball of the over.
England's latest rebuild starts here. Still plenty of time left in the innings!

I for one thinks this is all going rather well. Who’s with me?

Woakes drives outside off stump and just half a sniff of a catch at backward point, who was a few yards closer than you'd expected.
It was such a close call and Woakes walks off shaking his head all the way back to the pavilion.
I've played under a few coaches who would be marching their way to the match referee's office about now.

Well, if you say so.
The Sri Lanka side wheel away from their huddle in celebration. The third umpire has decided Samarawickrama got his fingers - or maybe just one finger - under the ball.
That was an extremely tough call, not that England will take any solace from that.
We're really spinning through the replays here.

Ben Stokes immediately signalled from the non-striker's end that this wasn't a clean catch.

The first picture was like something from a TV set from the 1940s, it was so blurry.
I think he might have got his fingers under the ball but it is hard for the third umpire to give this definitively. There is enough doubt.
Another one gone?
Has Chris Woakes lashed Rajitha's ball to backward point? The fielder looks unsure whether it has carried, it was taken very low. The umpires are going to take a look.
