  1. Aus 51-2published at 11 overs

A first sight of Mark Wood in this match as he replaces David Willey. Just three singles from the over, Labuschagne bringing up the Australian fifty with a shot to the off side boundary.

One of the friends I mentioned in the seventh over is tuned in with his newborn daughter. She's fast asleep though - wake up, baby Thea! This might be the best we see of England in this tournament.

Before this game just two other batters from Afghanistan had a lower strike-rate than Marnus Labuschagne of 77. He's averaging 33. He hasn't set this World Cup alight yet. If this was 1992 he would be one of the stars of the tournament!

I arrived on the train yesterday lunchtime in Ahmedabad from Mumbai. Your bags were scanned on the X-ray machine as you came out of the station. It's a dry state and a couple of people were trying to sneak in some whiskey but they were going nowhere with their bottles.

Patrick Brennan: Jos Buttler is the first England captain who I pray loses the toss every game.

  5. Aus 48-1published at 10 overs

Just the single from the over, Smith sending Chris Woakes's first ball to deep square leg.

That's the end of the powerplay and it's been a good one for England.

  6. New Zealand set Pakistan 402 to winpublished at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

England's decision to bowl first against Australia may have started well so far but Pakistan made the same choice, and it has backfired massively.

New Zealand post 401-6 with a stunning century from Rachin Ravindra, 95 from Kane Williamson and entertaining cameos from Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips. It is their highest-ever World Cup score.

Mohammad Wasim's 3-60 is a remarkable effort in such a score, but there's not much for the other bowlers to celebrate.

Haris Rauf (1-82) broke the record for Pakistan's most expensive figures in World Cup history, only for Shaheen Afridi (0-90) to break the record a few minutes later.

It's going to take something quite remarkable from Pakistan's batters here if they are to avoid elimination.

To be honest, I think Australia already have enough.

That's the shot Marnus Labuschagne was looking for. A nice off drive. He put power into that, and really swung the arms hard.

  9. Aus 47-2published at 9 overs

Labuschagne has his first boundary, pushing the first ball of David Willey's over to the right of mid-off.

The Australians then hustle through a quick single - Jonny Bairstow swoops and under-arms at the stumps, would have been close with a direct hit.

  10. Aus 41-2published at 8 overs

Steven Smith takes two with an edge past the stumps, but otherwise endures five dot balls facing Chris Woakes.

Australia find themselves slightly becalmed after thrashing around at the start.

A maiden over from David Willey. England have done a good job here. They have got rid of both openers and started to slow things down. Maybe in a few hours we'll say this is a masterstoke from, Jos Buttler at the toss.

In the last year or so I think I have spent more time watching Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne bat than I have with my wife, which is getting me into a little bit of trouble.

Maiden from the contract-less David Willey, bowling to Labuschagne.

The DJ greets it with a sound barrage that echoes around the Ahmedabad stadium.

I went to the previous edition of this ground in 2012 for the only Test England lost on that tour. I was meeting two friends who'd cycled all the way there from the UK - I took the easier option and flew.

A good catch from David Willey. Australia have been ultra aggressive and really targeted Chris Woakes but it's been their downfall.

Now we get Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith for a few hours. A bit of old school batting. If I was Australia I'd have had Cameron Green at number three and left Smith and Labuschagne at four and five. England won't mind bowling spin to Green later on.

  15. Aus 39-2published at 6 overs

Marnus Labuschagne is next up, with Australia sticking with their established batting order rather than bring Cameron Green in up the order.

He takes a single into the leg side to start off his innings.

David Warner slumps the shoulders, looks disappointed and trudges off. It's starting to work out for England.

    Another one gone!

Trying to go hard at Woakes again, David Warner comes onto a slower ball too quickly and sends the ball spiralling into the air.

David Willey takes the catch at mid-wicket and Australia are two down. Will they continue with this aggressive approach?

Thrashed down the ground by David Warner, the first six of the match!

Just a length ball from Chris Woakes but it was dispatched.

You cannot bowl there to Steve Smith. That's his bread and butter.

  20. Aus 32-1published at 5 overs

Willey drifts onto Smith's legs - you don't do that and he clips it with ease past a sprawling Adil Rashid at short fine leg.

    That's four.
