This has been such a crucial knock from Maxwell, it's been very mature. They need him to stay around right until the end.

  2. drinks break

    Aus 140-7published at 27 overs

    Target 292

An unconvincing waft outside off from Pat Cummins to end the Rashid Khan over.

He misses but the ball goes between wicketkeeper and slip. Four byes.

    Time for drinks.

Glenn Maxwell was halfway off after seeing where the ball pitched during this review.

    Not so fast, Glenn...

  4. Aus 131-7published at 26 overs

    Target 292

Just one more from the over. Glenn Maxwell is keeping Australia ticking over for now.

The required rate is a manageable 6.70 an over but, with only three wickets remaining, that will still take some doing.

  5. 50 runs

50 for Glenn Maxwellpublished at 25.1 overs

    Aus 130-7

A slightly streaky boundary over mid-off takes Glenn Maxwell to his half-century.

That's quite fitting really. He's had plenty of luck but has so far been rewarded for chancing his arm.

    A 51-ball half-century for him.

At the halfway stage, I was well and truly backing Australia but it is just the way Afghanistan have gone about this World Cup.

The way Rashid Khan has bowled tonight, it's a return to form that has perhaps taken longer than expected.

  8. Aus 126-7published at 25 overs

    Target 292

A single second ball gives Rashid Khan four balls at Pat Cummins.

The Australia skipper shows little attacking intent but does what he as to with Glenn Maxwell going well at the end: he survives.

Afghanistan don't need to panic, they just need to keep bowling their best balls. Just stay very calm, they've got some quality bowlers, quality spinners. Maxwell will play some shots, but if you keep bowling your best balls, as he has shown in the last four overs, it will give chances.

  10. Aus 125-7published at 24 overs

    Target 292

Just three singles after that first-ball boundary.

Glenn Maxwell keeps himself on strike for the start of the next, though.

Just because there was no bat involved doesn't mean this wasn't a brilliant catch from Ikram Alikhil...

  12. Aus 122-7published at 23.1 overs

    Target 292

    Four more!

Big sweep shot, not timed but the ball beats mid-wicket and runs away to the boundary sponge.

Glenn Maxwell is having some fun.

Maxwell looks like he is being able to pick Rashid Khan here. There's only been one ball that has beaten the bat.

  14. Aus 118-7published at 23 overs

    Target 292

Glenn Maxwell goes again, thumping Rashid Khan over the leg side now.

He remains the key but he's using up his lives quickly at the moment!

That's the brilliance of Maxwell. The Afghanistan players were up and disappointed. Australia need 179, but Maxwell is a freak and while he is there, they know there is still a hope.

Maxwell walked twice in the last over.

  17. Aus 113-7published at 22 overs

    Target 292

Glenn Maxwell is riding his luck but he's going for it now.

It should make for a very exciting next few overs!

Since that lbw, Maxwell has played a wild sweep shot and a hack. He looks like he's going to try and hit this into the stands now.

Maxwell didn't get the elevation, Mujeeb has been found there. He dropped one there against New Zealand and now that.

  20. dropped catch

Maxwell dropped on 33published at 21.5 overs

    Aus 112-7

    Goodness me, that's a dolly!

Having reverse-swept superbly for four the ball before, Glenn Maxwell tries to flip the ball behind square on the leg side.

He doesn't get anywhere near enough of it, though, and it loops gently to short fine leg... where Mujeeb Ur Rahman drops a sitter.
