  1. drinks break

    Ind 118-1published at 15 overs

    Kohli 16, Gill 52

Clever bowling from Mitchell Santner, who is varying his pace well.

He tosses one up to Shubman Gill and the opener miscues slightly as he tries to drive.

The ball loops up into the off side but over the in-field for a single.

    Time for drinks.

  2. Ind 114-1published at 14 overs

    Super shot from Virat Kohli.

Slightly too full and wide of off stump from Rachin Ravindra, allowing the former India skipper to stroke the ball through the covers for four.

Shubman Gill is going well and now Kohli is starting to purr. More worrying signs for New Zealand.

A half century for Shubman Gill! He's the man I love watching bat the most. An extremely talented young man.

  4. 50 runs

50 for Shubman Gillpublished at 13.3 overs

    Ind 107-1

Shubman Gill goes to his half-century from 41 balls. A typically elegant knock from the India opener.

He played second fiddle to Rohit Sharma early but he's pushed on and has hit seven fours and a six.

New Zealand have form for expensive starts with the ball - they conceded 118 in 10 overs against Australia - but they only lost that game by five runs in the end.

  6. Ind 104-1published at 13 overs

Three overs into this spell and Lockie Ferguson has gone for 30.

Not great but then the most economical Black Caps bowler so far has been Mitchell Santner and he's going at sevens.

All the talk has been about the pitch but India are making it look very, very flat.

A short-arm jab, nothing more. A wonderful shot.

  9. 6 runs

    Ind 102-1published at 12.2 overs

Well, I guess India decided one quiet over was enough.

Shubman Gill whips the first ball of the over for four and then pummels the next high over deep mid-wicket for six.

Lockie Ferguson has taken some punishment early in his spell.

  10. Ind 92-1published at 12 overs

Very good over from Mitchell Santner as he returns to the attack.

After four dot balls to start the over, Shubman Gill sweeps the fourth behind square but is denied a boundary by a diving stop in the deep.

Better for New Zealand but, after the start they've had, India can afford the odd quiet over.

Just the one wicket so far for New Zealand. A superb catch from Kane Williamson off the bowling of Tim Southee to see the back of Rohit Sharma...

  12. Ind 89-1published at 11 overs

A quieter end to the over with just a single from the last three balls.

India are still rattling along at eight-an-over.

There are not many Kiwi supporters here. It's just a sea of blue. I wonder if there were any late discussions in the New Zealand camp about picking Ish Sodhi given the change of pitch.

  14. Ind 88-1published at 10.3 overs

Powerplay over but the runs keep coming.

Tim Southee strays a little too straight and Shubman Gill effortlessly flicks the ball between mid-wicket and mid-on for four.

India have been excellent but the good thing for New Zealand is they have got Rohit Sharma out. Another 10 or 15 overs of him it might have been game, set and match for India.

  17. Ind 84-1published at 10 overs

Lockie Ferguson bangs the ball in short to Shubman Gill twice in the over.

And twice he is pulled away behind square for four.

Two more boundaries to end a hugely productive powerplay for India. They're making hay before this twice-used pitch really starts to get slow.

Having returned from my adventures outside, I was greeted with a “where have you been?” from one of the TMS team given I am now a sweaty mess.

And it’s still cooler than the day England were hammered by South Africa here.

  19. Ind 75-1published at 9 overs

Five runs from the over, plus the big wicket of Rohit Sharma.

It feels odd to say a team has pulled it back a little when the opposition are 75-1 after nine overs but it's something for New Zealand.

The review helps Virat Kohli get off the mark, too. That's now four runs to him!
