If South Africa lose the toss and get asked to field first, should they just forfeit the match there and then? Would save everyone's' time.

Fifty up for South Africa as David Miller looks to break out of the box his side have been very firmly put in.

His strikes Jadeja for two fours, paddling behind square before firing a shot through point.

We're going to have drinks and a light show in Kolkata. The floodlights are flaring and the crowd are chipping in with their phone torches.

You have to give credit to Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. They have got the crowd at Eden Gardens on their feet with the way they have bowled.

  5. SA 42-5published at 14 overs

The looming figure of Marco Jansen appears to join David Miller, a lot of weight on his young shoulders.

He takes two through backward square to get going.

Wow. Mohammed Shami what a delivery! That seam position - how does he manage to keep it so straight? South Africa in big trouble.

van der Dussen lbw b Shami 13 (SA 40-5)

    Oh yes, that's gone!

Wild scenes in the crowd, swathes of Indian fans in blue shirts are absolutely rapturous.

Just takes the top of the stumps - that must have been pretty close to umpire's call, but it looked out.

South Africa in deep, deep trouble.

  8. Umpire reviewpublished at 13.1 overs

    Have we got another?!

Shami raps Van der Dussen on the pads, above the knee roll. Looks pretty good, umpire Paul Reiffel says no but both bowler and keeper are furiously making the review T-sign straight away.

The ball has actually run away into the deep and the South African batters take a run, India captain Rohit Sharma looks irked that no-one's concentrating, but consents to the review.

    To the third umpire!

    Klaasen lbw b Jadeja 1 (SA 40-4)

Snicko has nothing, the ball passing cleanly as Klaasen went to sweep, there was a sound as the bat hit the ground - maybe that's what led the umpire to say no?

Now for ball tracking... three reds! Straightening to hit leg stump! Klaasen goes for one.

Wild celebrations from the Indian huddle, Klaasen looks furious.

Now where has this pitched? In the area of leg-stump? Ravindra Jadeja was adamant that it was out.

  11. Umpire reviewpublished at 13:59 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2023

Jadeja thinks he has Klaasen lbw. He's appealing wildly, running down the middle of the pitch.

Umpire Kumar Dharmasena says no, but the bowler has convinced his captain and we go upstairs.

  12. SA 37-3published at 12 overs

Van der Dussen takes a single from Shami's first delivery, pushing into point, before Heinrich Klaasen sees off the rest of the over without scoring.

The South African batter is normally such a big hitter, but finds himself scoreless from nine balls. Will that pressure take its toll?

Ex-India batter Suresh Raina on X: When I first met him, I remember every game he would say, ‘paaji aaj 100 banana hai’*. Well done Virat, so beautiful, so elegant, just looking like a wow, looking like a wow!.

This translates roughly as 'Today, I must make a 100'

Ex-India batter Virender Sehwag on X: What a day to equal the great man's record of most ODI 100's. His birthday at the historic Eden Gardens. Take a bow, Virat Kohli. Congratulations on a great one.

Ex-Australia captain Lisa Sthalekar: Can’t see how India can’t bowl out a side or defend a total. If Bumrah doesn’t get you, Siraj does. If he doesn’t get you, Shami does. If you survive the pace then good luck getting through Jadeja & Kuldeep. Unbelievable bowling unit!

South Africa's batting line up was probably the biggest test for India when batting first, but not quite the same second.

  16. SA 36-3published at 11 overs

One single from Jadeja's second over as Van der Dussen pushes one down to long on.

There were three boundaries in the powerplay, India hit 17.

I just don't know how South Africa can be two different teams from batting first and second. They would never 35-3 batting first against this India attack.

  18. SA 35-3published at 10 overs

New batter Heinrich Klaasen pushes into mid-wicket to end the powerplay.

India were 91-1 at the end of their first ten - two worms rapidly heading in different directions.

It's been reviewed but Aiden Markram is walking off very slowly. He's accepted his fate. He knew he was not going to be able to escape the TV evidence.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.5 overs

    Markram c Rahul b Shami 9 (SA 35-3)

And like Jadeja before him, Mohammed Shami has a wicket in his first over!

Aiden Markram hits him for successive fours, driving down the ground through the hands of the bowler and then edging through fine leg, but the India seamer has him with his next delivery.

A lit bit of a waft from Markram and it takes the edge off the bottom of the bat, Rahul takes the catch between his legs.

The umpires just check the catch but Markram is walking off. I think Rahul dragging his spikes in the ground brought up a bit of turf and that's what led to the check.
