  1. See you in 2024...published at 23:56 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2023

Well, that's 2023 wrapped up for England's cricketers.

"The defeat completes a disappointing end to the year for England's white-ball sides after a 2-1 series defeat in the one-day internationals that preceded the T20 leg of the tour, and the group-stage exit of the 50-over World Cup in November," is the sobering verdict of my colleague Ffion Wynne.

You can digest every word of her match report here...

Here's some other cricket stories which might be of interest to you:

There's plenty to look forward to in 2024 - not least England's Test tour of India which starts at the end of January. How will BazBall fare in India? Oh and there's also the small matter of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA next summer, too.

Thanks for your company throughout this year. See you on the other side.

  2. 'Shai Hope was key'published at 23:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2023

West Indies skipper Rovman Powell: "We spent some time yesterday in some team meetings and those meetings served us well. We are still a good bowling unit but in the previous two games the guys just didn't execute. It was closer than we thought at the end today, yes. We kept losing key wickets but we always knew Shai Hope was going to be the important man on this pitch.

"When England batted on it we knew it was not going to offer a lot of shots. We had someone in Shai who could graft in the middle overs and get to 40 off 35 balls that would serve us as a batting group well. In each and every game we have had players who stand up.

"I have a good bunch of guys round me, and good support staff. The guys respect me and trust me, and my judgment. I try to lead from the front and as a captain if you do that people will follow.

"The pitches have been good and credit to the grounds people right across the Caribbean. We had good wickets in Barbados, Grenada and again here in Trinidad. A lot of times in the Caribbean we as players are unhappy with the work that goes on with the grounds but hats off to them they have done fantastic."

  3. 'Important to take the learnings'published at 23:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2023

England captain Jos Buttler: "The conditions were different from a few days ago with it being a used wicket. We probably didn't manage to adapt quickly enough. I thought 160 would have been a decent score to defend. I thought it was a fantastic bowling effort and we needed wickets to try to win the game.

"We did well to hang in there as long as we did. If we had a few more runs to play with it might have allowed us to put a bit more pressure on the opposition but I thought we did well with the ball.

"Phil Salt has had a fantastic series with back-to-back hundreds. Even today he was getting set again. He's had a brilliant series. We've found out lots about ourselves as a team and it's important we take the learnings and make sure we continue to improve. The breeze plays a big part here, the way the pitches can play, the premium with six hitting.

"The stop clock? We only really noticed it in the last game here. I thought everyone got round pretty quickly. It's another part of game and it's good to keep it moving."

Kev Mcveigh: Phil Salt's average of 82.75 for this series is higher than Harry Brook's or Will Jacks' total runs. It's higher than anyone's best score by a mile. His lowest score is higher than Jacks' best. Maybe now he'll get credit from the media and selectors. Maybe.

Player of the series, England batter Phil Salt: "It's disappointing to come out on the wrong side of it. It was another good game of cricket tonight and we took it as deep as we could. Shai Hope played a really good knock and I think we will be better off in the coming months for this experience.

"My own form? I'm not sure to be honest. Maybe it's more time in and around the set-up, the conversations with Jos Buttler and learning off him. I feel that's the sort of thing. International cricket has been a learning curve for me and I will keep trying to take in as much as I can.

"The pitches have been a challenge. There's a lot more on the toss in this part of the world than maybe we are used to at home. When we batted first in daylight it was a different wicket to when the floodlights came on. That's a different game and challenge your game management."

Player of the match Gudakesh Motie of West Indies, who took 3-24: "I know my ability and stick to putting the ball in the right area. The most important thing is hitting the lengths in international cricket. Finger spinners don't get much from the wicket so you have to work on other things such as length.

"It's my second series and it means a lot to me. I think it was total team effort to win the series."

Heartbreak for England. They might have had a sniff going into the last over after an excellent 19th from Sam Curran. But it was lost in the first half of the game. England were duped into believing the pitch was as good as the other day and they didn't adapt quickly enough. Looking forward to the T20 World Cup next year, reading conditions will be crucial for teams to do well in that tournament and England have to do it better than they did today.

A satisfying series win for West Indies regardless of how hard they made it from 2-0 up. It's been some good solid results for Rovman Powell as captain and Darren Sammy as coach. It looks like things are coming together. We are seeing some good bits of strategy from them.

  18. WI 122-5published at 18 overs

Andre Russell, batting neither a helmet nor a cap, waiting for something he can punish from Rehan Ahmed but has to settle for a few singles.

Ahmed's penultimate delivery is deliciously dispatched to the boundary by Shai Hope as he opens up the face of the bat and thrashes it behind point.

West Indies need 11 from 12 balls.

What an ending to this series. I've been gripped. Whatever way it goes, it's been a thrill.
