    Tom Hartley!

Who had the left-arm spinner down as the batter who would hit the first six of this series?

It's a slog sweep off the great Ravichandran Ashwin.

Jadeja's comeback over is a profitable one for England. Firstly Tom Hartley tickles one fine to the boundary before Ben Stokes plays the reverse club - it's not really a sweep - which rockets to the fence.

Remarkably that's Stokes' first boundary after 53 deliveries.

After three overs of Jasprit Bumrah's pace it's back to spin at both ends as Ravindra Jadeja returns.

Rob might have just taken the lead in our most boring view competition. That is very beige.

Tom Hartley has batted for 13 balls in Test cricket and we've already seen the slog sweep, reverse sweep and heave to long-on.

I still think a score over 200 would be an OK effort on a pitch that is turning this much on day one. It might not be match-winning but it would be OK.

They only scored over 200 twice in four Tests on the 2021 tour, remember.

Tom Hartley is still swinging hard.

In a nutshell, quite a lot.

England made a very good start through Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley's opening stand of 55, and Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow rescued them from a three-wicket wobble to 108-3 at lunch.

But it has been all India since then. Joe Root miscued a sweep, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes both got beauties from Axar Patel and Rehan Ahmed was the latest to fall to Jasprit Bumrah - the only wicket to fall to pace so far.

The ball is turning plenty and India's spinners have made the most of it. Captain Ben Stokes is digging in with 14 from 47 balls so far, as England look to get as close to 200 as they can.

Tom Hartley scores his first runs in Test cricket by smashing Ravichandran Ashwin for four!

Stokes beats his bat in applause at the other end. The England skipper loves what he sees.

That was so good from Bumrah. He's grinning after re-enacting how he rolled his wrist across the ball to a team-mate.

Hartley gets the yorker first before two that almost wipe out the top of off.

The left-hander's introduction to Test cricket is the full Bumrah box of tricks.

Tom Hartley joins Ben Stokes in the middle on debut. Good luck to him.

He averages 29 in first-class cricket so is no mug.

A beautiful bit of bowling. England are in all sorts of trouble now, even the seam bowlers are bowling spin!

It's the off-cutter from Jasprit Bumrah. It really is masterful bowling from him in these conditions.

Rehan Ahmed's fun is over. Jasprit Bumrah shows his intelligence by throwing in a slower ball. It seems to bounce off the surface and Ahmed gets a thin inside edge on the drive.

    He could be bowling soon.

    Caaaaaatch!

No. Rehan Ahmed decides he's had enough of poking around and instead clears a leg to smash Ashwin back down the ground.

The ball only just creeps over mid-on's head but Ahmed does get four. The teenager tries again later in the over but misses out completely.

I'm wondering whether England would be best attacking Bumrah, given the ball is turning sharply at the other end.

Easier said than done, obviously, although if India are going to gift four overthrows as they have here it'll certainly help.

That's a five to Rehan Ahmed.

Are England in trouble? Their positivity has got them runs on the board. Pitch isn’t going to get better. Suppose we will find out once both teams have had a bat. Which should be tomorrow morning.
