The ball is turning virtually every delivery now. You can see the puffs of dust and the pieces of the pitch coming off when it lands.

The pressure is right on now. The crowd is loud and fielders surrounding the bat.

    Welcome to India.

That's massive for India. Joe Root going for the sweep but Jadeja gets the turn and bounce. The field placing from Rohit Sharma is perfect again, and that's a huge moment.

    Problems!

India strike the biggest blow as Joe Root falls on the sweep. It's a shot that brings him so many runs but this time a top edge loops straight to short fine leg.

Re 31 overs comment (see 06:53 GMT) of to much holiday chat. Here’s my view waiting for the bus in York.

    No sign of Ashwin yet.

Axar continues to dart them in like a balding Luke Littler to the England captain.

  8. How's stat?!published at 07:07 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January

Will Rohit Sharma turn to Ravichandra Ashwin now?

The off-spinner has a superb record against Ben Stokes, dismising him nine times in 18 Test innings in India.

The England captain averages just 18.3 against Ashwin in those games.

  9. Eng 123-4published at 34 overs

Joe Root is grinning and looking wide-eyed at his captain now after two deliveries from Ravindra Jadeja turn a mile to beat the edge.

England expected turning pitches and they've got one.

Just as England were looking dangerous again with that partnership of Bairstow and Root, it's an absolute ripper from Axar Patel to break it. Things could unfold pretty quickly now, looking at how much that one turned.

As Tuffers says, Ben Stokes is now in and things looks a little precarious for England.

An absolute beauty from Axar Patel. It's pitching on middle and leg, and hitting off stump. You can't do much about those.

India needed that early breakthrough after lunch and there could be trouble coming up for England here. They need to rebuild again with Root and Ben Stokes.

Blimey! Jonny Bairstow is bowled by an absolute snorter from Axar Patel. That has turned and bounced to beat the outside edge and hit the top of off. Close to unplayable.

    Careful!

They are the golden rules of cricket - don't take a run on a misfield, always play your best keeper and never take a risky single to Ravindra Jadeja.

Jonny Bairstow dives to make his ground but I still think he'd have been short with a direct hit.

A fascinating start to this series, that's what.

England made a very good start against the pace of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, reaching 41-0 after eight overs with a lot of attacking intent.

Then the spinners came on, the ball ragged, England lost three wickets for five runs in 21 balls and things felt awfully familiar.

Ben Duckett got one from Ravichandran Ashwin skidded on to hit his pad - the tech had the ball clipping the top of leg stump, a jittery Ollie Pope edged to slip for one and Zak Crawley drove Ashwin into the hands of mid-off.

At that stage it was panic stations, every ball looking like getting a wicket, but Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have smartly taken England on since with an unbroken partnership of more than 50.

  16. Eng 118-3published at 32 overs

After a steady start, the pressure squeezes on Jonny Bairstow a little as Ravindra Jadeja, headband, curls and all, joins the dots through a maiden.

    That's not very Bazbally...

There has been too much showing off of holiday photos on this page for my liking this morning.

Joe Root gets low but misses as he sweeps.

More good running from this Yorkshire duo as Bairstow calls Root through for a tight single.

Bairstow is another of this England squad that looks to have slimmed down since the World Cup.

Four from the over without really trying.

  20. Eng 112-3published at 29 overs

    Root 20, Bairstow 34

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel - Durham's Axar Patel, that is - starts things off for India after the break.

England begin with four easy singles with the two to Root nudging him closer to that record haul of 2,555 runs by Ricky Ponting.
