Pope has got to look to be a little less frenetic during this innings. He was stabby in the first innings which brings in the outside edge.

Ollie Pope was all at sea in his first innings, perhaps unsurprisingly as he's been out of action since June.

He's got a tricky period to navigate before lunch here.

He gets off the mark in more assured fashion, driving nicely for two past cover, but gets carried away and tries to reverse sweep his second ball and misses.

    Steady on.

Great piece of bowling from Ashwin. It has gone on with the arm to Crawley from round the wicket.

Delicious delivery and difficult to play when you don't know which way the ball is going.

    And there it is.

The masterful Ravichandran Ashwin strikes, unfazed by the attacking intent that Zak Crawley was showing.

Full, flighted from round the wicket and a bit of turn draws Crawley forward, finds the edge and Rohit Sharma pounces the catch at slip.

    A lovely piece of bowling.

It has been a very good start by the openers. Batsmen of yesteryears won’t understand the reverse sweeps, and with variable bounce there is more risk. But it disturbs bowlers’ rhythm and orthodox field settings.

Another lovely cover drive from Duckett brings him three, as the pair continue to rotate the strike nicely. It's had the desired effect so far, as Axar and Ashwin are forced to think differently and can't settle in.

How long it'll last before one keeps low or spins sharply, though...

Ashwin is just bowling a full fuller to Duckett and Crawley, trying to get the lbw when they are playing the sweep and reverse sweep so often.

Shot! Slightly more conventional from Zak Crawley as he cashes in on some width from Ashwin, and threads it through the vacant covers for four.

    Lovely timing.

Great shot by Crawley. It is fraught with danger on this pitch because you have got to get right to the pitch of the ball.

But it has been a good positive start by England's batters. You can't allow India to settle into a line and length.

You have got to look to be proactive.

That's one way to negate the spin!

Crawley skips down the pitch and elegantly lofts Axar Patel over his head for six!

And not to be overshadowed, Duckett follows it with a reverse sweep of his own to the ropes.

    Enough of the blocking.

Even Zak Crawley is getting the reverse sweep out. You have got to get down low so it is difficult for a tall man like him. Duckett is the one for the reverse sweeps.

No mention yet of Mr Agnew's appearance on Celebrity Mastermind yesterday evening. Some answers on Cake clearly desserted him...

Yes, if you missed it Aggers was on Mastermind last night. You can watch it on iPlayer here.

When in doubt, reverse sweep. That appears to be Zak Crawley's mantra for the day, as he helps himself to four more off Ashwin, who does not look amused by Crawley's methods.

Two overs for Bumrah, one of the best seamers in the world, and then he has a blow. I'd love to be a seam bowler in India...

As predicted, Jasprit Bumrah's opening spell consists of two overs.

Here's Axar Patel. Zak Crawley has edged a couple, one flying past short leg, but he rotates the strike pretty well.

A few wobbles but he's hanging in there.

Just one from the over as Ashwin continues to test Ben Duckett's defence - or should I say, his reverse sweep.

It's a fairly one-sided contest between these two in Test cricket. Ashwin has got Duckett out four times for just 18 runs in five innings.

Adam Davies: We cannot expect Joe Root to bowl 30 overs and then bat four. Surely? If we lose two quick then surely Bairstow needs to come out.

Shot! Zak Crawley drills a back-foot punch through the covers for four.

I don't think Jasprit Bumrah will be bowling a particularly long opening spell today. He could be a handful if the old ball starts to reverse later on, though.

Ashwin has three men back straight away for Crawley. I'm struggling to recall a time when Stokes had more than two at any point for his spinners.

  20. Eng 6-0published at 2 overs

    Amazing.

Zak Crawley pads one to short leg tentatively, drawing half an appeal from Ashwin.

His response? A reverse sweep for four.
