More from England captain Ben Stokes on TNT Sports: "Incredibly proud. We were 190 behind, going into our second innings. Before the series started, we knew how much of a beast India are at home but the way we responded to being so far behind, it was testament to everything we have said and lived and breathed over the last two years.

"But we've got four Tests left. It's about backing up this performance now. We know that India are going to come back harder at us, they are an incredibly tough team but if we can keep standing up to them, it's a good sign for us.

"But it's very early days, we are very proud to be 1-0 up but there is a long way to go."

Player of the match, Ollie Pope on TNT Sports: "Yeah, 100% [my best innings]. It is the toughest place to come as a batter. So to start a series like that and do it in a winning cause, it's head and shoulders above my other four [centuries].

"I think I got luckier in the second innings really, I did play and miss at quite a few early on. I wanted to be positive with sweeping and reverse sweeping.

"I have tinkered throughout with my career with a few technical things and I have changed a few things before this series. I had shoulder surgery so I had a long time to prepare for it, and make some adjustments. I think my technique is more tailored for these conditions.

"My family have had some early starts back home throughout this week so they can finally catch up on some sleep tonight!"

Tom Hartley's 7-62 are the fifth best innings figures by an England player on debut in men's Tests and the second best by a debutant spinner.

His 9-193 in the match is the best for England on debut since John Lever in December 1976 (10-70 v India) and the best by a spinner since Bob Berry in 1950 (9-115 v West Indies).

One for the ages that. Testament to good man management. Brian Clough style from Stokes & Mccullum, taking the pressure away, so players perform. Magnificent!

Is this the first time in the history of Test cricket that Australia and India have lost a Test match at home on the same day? What a time to be alive.

  7. 'England greatest innings on subcontinent' - Stokes on Pope's 196published at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Ollie PopeImage source, Getty Images

More from England captain Ben Stokes: "Tom Hartley came into the squad for the first time and he's heard a lot of language spoken and confidence given to him. I was willing to given him a longer spell at the start regardless of what happened. It was a justification for what was going to happen later in the Test, in the series. Whether that's the reason he got seven wickets, who knows, but that was the thought process."

On Ollie Pope's hundred: "I have played a lot of times with Joe Root on the subcontinent, but I think the situation we found ourselves with him in coming in at number there I think Ollie Pope's 196, the way he manipulated the field, I think that's the greatest innings played by an English batter in the subcontinent."

On the team's mentality: "There's no fear of defeat, no. You lose and still wake up the morning breathing and you'll still have a crack at life regardless, I don't fear failure. I am trying to encourage whoever finds themselves lucky enough in the squad to express themselves."

This victory also says a lot about the style of England captain Ben Stokes. But it says a lot about the style and thought processes of not just Stokes, but of all of those England players as well.

  10. 'Our greatest triumph' - Stokespublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Ben StokesImage source, Getty Images

England Ben Stokes on TNT Sports: "We have had a lot of fantastic moments as a team, great victories but given where we are, and who are playing, I think it's our greatest triumph since I have been captain.

"To be honest it's my first time here being in charge of a team in India and captain in these conditions. You may not see it but I am a great observer of the game. I watched a lot of how Rohit Shamra set the field. I think that may have been obvious with our approach.

"I am thrilled for everyone involved with this win. For Tom Hartley to get nine wickets on debut, and Ollie Pope to get a big hundred after, is incredible. But everyone contributed."

  11. 'Overall we failed as a team' - Rohitpublished at 12:36 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

More from Rohit Sharma: "I went and analysed where we bowled, and we did bowl in a lot of good areas. They executed their plans but sometimes you just have to raise your cap and say well played because for Ollie Pope it was a serious knock.

"Overall, we failed as a team. We were in the game after both first innings were done.

"I wanted them [Bumrah and Siraj] to try and take the game to the fifth day because with 20 or 30 runs anything is possible. But our lower order did very well there, they showed our top order how to tough it out and be brave. We didn't take chances with the bat but it is the first Test of the series, so I hope we can learn from that."

  12. 'I definitely thought 230 was gettable' - Rohitpublished at 12:34 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Rohit SharmaImage source, Getty Images

India captain Rohit Sharma on TNT Sports: "We have played four whole days of cricket so it is hard to pinpoint one moment where it went wrong for us. Obviously, having taken a lead of 190 we thought we were really in the game.

"But there was an exceptional innings from Ollie Pope, probably one of the best I have seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter. He was brilliant.

"But I definitely thought 230 was gettable. There wasn't loads in the pitch but we just didn't bat well enough."

  13. 'Pressure got to India'published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

From India's point of view, the pressure got to them as the home team and as the favourites. Their approach was very defensive, nothing like we saw in the first innings and I wonder if they copped a bit of criticism for some of the ways they got out playing their shots.

The second innings was the other end of the spectrum and batting last in these conditions, you won't win by being that defensive.

So that is something for them to think about going forward in the series. A few of their batters got out playing those shots in the first innings, but I'd rather that.

Another thing they need to consider is bowling tactics and field placement - especially when they know how much Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope will play those unconventional shots, the reverse sweeps.

They will have to come up with a plan to stop them playing those shots so freely.

The player of the match is, you guessed it, Ollie Pope for his 196.

Aggers says it's one of the great Test innings.

Biggest first innings lead by India ending in a losing cause in Tests:

    3. 132 v England at Birmingham in July 2022

A superb Test match. At the end of the day the braver team won. The team which was brave enough to take a few more chances than the other. I think that was the story of the Test match as far as I was concerned.

Obviously, Ollie Pope. What an innings.

One of the best you will see from an overseas player in India. Absolutely brilliant. Obviously for me the player-of-the-match as well.

  20. 'Runs with the bat helped my nerves'published at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    Tom HartleyImage source, Getty Images

More from England spinner Tom Hartley: "There is never a dull moment with Ben Stokes as your captain. I'm looking around thinking, where's that fielder gone, he was there the ball before! But that's his way and we have all bought into it. And we've got the result today so it is definitely working.

"I was nervous this morning but a few runs always helps. It helped ease my nerves but also got me to learn a few things about how the pitch was playing and that helped my bowling.

"My favourite wicket, I think either the first or the last - they were a massive relief.

"After the first innings, I learned that I didn't have to bowl as fast as I thought I did, I could take my time in my run up - especially from watching how Jadeja and Ashwin went about it. The new ball didn't spin as much so it was about changing things up when it got older and easier to grip."
