A six to bring up your century! Go on Yashasvi Jaiswal!

The left-hander skips down the pitch and plants Tom Hartley back over his head for a second Test century.

He missed out when well-placed in the first Test but he's reached the landmark this time. Will he go on and get a daddy ton now?

Shreyas continues to move around in his crease trying to show intent but this is day one - the bowlers will bowl balls he can score off and his focus should be keeping Jaiswal company.

  3. Ind 164-2published at 48 overs

Tidy stuff from Shoaib Bashir, just a single off the over.

Rehan Ahmed is doing some loosening up on the boundary edge. Is that a sign he's coming soon or just a reminder to Ben Stokes that he is playing?

Now we're talking! Superb stuff Ruth and John.

Shoaib Bashir will continue after drinks.

We're having a traditional Spanish breakfast of 'churros con chocolate' - deep fried batter with a cup of hot chocolate sauce to dip them in. Hardly the breakfast of athletes, but should see us through the afternoon session of play.

It's a period of consolidation for India, and a game of patience for England.

  7. drinks break

    Ind 163-2published at 47 overs

Shreyas Iyer is moving around quite a lot in his crease and Tom Hartley, for the third or fourth time, pulls out in his delivery stride. He'll be used to that from white-ball cricket but it can't he helping him get into a rhythm.

Time for a drink. England will be speaking about how they can create some opportunities in the second half of the session.

I had 3 Pork pies and a cookie for breakfast, which is certainly an unorthodox option!

Good comeback from Shoaib Bashir with just a single off the remainder of the over.

India have added 57 runs in 15 overs in this session so far.

  10. Ind 159-2published at 45.1 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal has flicked a switch.

Shoaib Bashir over-pitches and the left-hander drills him back down the ground for another boundary.

That's four boundaries in the past six balls.

Fascinating to watch these two Indian batters compile their innings. Years ago, Dravid & Tendulkar would not give you a sniff by limiting risk and being relentless in playing straight and accumulating.

But I'm not sure Shreyas Iyer has settled yet and found his Test match tempo.

  12. Ind 155-2published at 45 overs

Salt meet wound and all that.

Yashasvi Jaiswal makes the most of his life with a crunching straight drive and then cover drive for four.

He pinches the strike with a single too and he's now just 14 away from a Test cenury.

I feel harsh going drop here, but Joe Root gets his fingertips to it so I have to.

Root is just unable to react quickly enough as Yashasvi Jaiswal edges Tom Hartley as he rocks back and looks to cut away.

It is dropping on Root and he can't adjust in time.

To further clarify from Sam. Any calories consumed in the purgatory or danger zones do not count. My breakfast was a plain croissant, but toasted and with some chocolate hazelnut spread. And a coffee and some fruit juice. And the pill I need to take for my 42-year-old gouty elbows. Not jealous of Jimmy at all.

  15. Ind 142-2published at 44 overs

I mentioned Rehan Ahmed a few overs ago. He's still not bowling but a misfield gives Yashasvi Jaiswal a couple. Ahmed also let a shot go through his hands on the boundary for Jaiswal's half-century earlier.

There is a bowling change with debutant Shoaib Bashir back on. This is the first time I've seen him bowl and it's interesting to see how he tucks into the umpire before a leap takes him pretty wide on the crease. That change in angle must be difficult for batters.

  16. Ind 139-2published at 43 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer have now put on 50 off 85 balls for the third wicket.

It has been a chanceless partnership so far too.

Without being too harsh, it feels like the polyjuice potion that turned Joe Root into Graeme Swann might have worn off.

Shott! Pitched up from Joe Root and Yashasvi Jaiswal carves a drive over the covers for his second six. He's looking good the left-hander.

We haven't seen Rehan Ahmed yet today. He lacked control at times in the first game but it does feel slightly peculiar that Joe Root is now through 10 overs and we haven't seen the leg-spinner once.

9.30 with The Breakfast Club, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, beans, tomatoes, black pudding, toast and tea - now that’s what you call breakfast.

How does that work if you're up at 3am for a Test though, Sam? Our shift will finish between around 12 and then waiting for lunch feels unlikely if I'm being honest.

Tom Hartley whizzes through another over. It was a good one until a rank long hop is pulled to the fence by Yashasvi Jaiswal.
