It was curious that Rehan Ahmed was held back until the 60th over. Ben Stokes is a naturally aggressive captain so you would think he is someone you would expect him to turn to.

England have acquitted themselves well and they just need to hang in there. If they can get a couple of wickets and then get into the lesser experienced middle-lower then they give themselves a chance to restrict India to a manageable total.

It does look like India have learnt their lesson from the first Test and have the bit between their teeth.

It's been a really, really impressive innings from Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has played beautifully and it could get ominous for England because he is a player who can go through the gears and go big.

India have laid a brilliant platform.

    Mark is right.

With Ravindra Jadeja missing this game through injury, India opted to replace him with a bowler, rather than an all-rounder.

It means Axar Patel is carded to come in at six, before wicketkeeper KS Bharat and then Ravichandran Ashwin.

England will sense they aren't far away from potentially being able to get a couple quickly.

Another good over from Shoaib Bashir challenging the right hander from over and around the wicket.

That was India's session, but one mistake and England are into the all-rounders.

India’s session, but England still in the game at this stage.

    India take session two.

They add 122 runs, while England pick up the wicket of Shreyas Iyer.

It's tough work for England, on a flat track, but they've hung in pretty well.

  7. Ind 223-3published at 62 overs

Rehan Ahmed whizzes through another over. Just a single from it.

One more to come before we head off for tea.

  8. Ind 222-3published at 61 overs

Lovely placement. Shoaib Bashir offers Yashasvi Jaiswal some width and the left-hander forces the ball through a tiny gap between short third and backward point to pick up another boundary. He's been brilliant.

Bike ride update. Arrived worn out and soaking wet. Had a row with an E-scooter, plus someone left the milk out for coffee. Still one wicket is better than none. Come on England, just a few more to take the edge off the morning.

    Here he is!

Ben Stokes has thrown the ball to Rehan Ahmed.

No pressure lad, everyone has just been asking for you for the past 45 minutes or so.

England's use, or lack of use, of Rehan Ahmed is curious. Admittedly, he would come into his own against the lower order, but that feels a real luxury. He would have started the tour as the second spinner, but now seems to be behind even Joe Root. Would an extra pacer have been more use? If England need him to bat eight, then there are other candidates that could have been in the squad.

  13. Ind 215-3published at 59 overs

Joe Root responds with four dot balls.

We're just over 10 minutes from the tea interval by the way. Two or three more overs most likely.

I love the way Patidar doesn't try to hit the reverse sweep too hard, just helps it on its way. So far his body language and maturity look completely different to Shreyas Iyer.

  15. Ind 215-3published at 58.2 overs

Rajat Patidar is clicking through the gears.

He reverse sweeps Joe Root for four, before giving himself some room to create the angle to drive through the covers.

    He's up to 21 off 29 balls.

That's a classy shot from Patidar. He's playing into the spin, hitting Bashir through the covers.

Even at this stage of the match the danger ball looks to be slightly back of a good length, the one that the batter goes back to and it shoots through low.

  17. Ind 207-3published at 58 overs

Lovely shot. Rajat Patidar picks up his first boundary in international cricket as he opens the face of his bat and drives through Shoaib Bashir through the covers.

Bashir has got through 18 overs now by the way. He's got 1-64.

  18. Ind 202-3published at 57 overs

Five singles from Joe Root's over.

He hasn't looked that threatening with the ball today and has figures of 0-45 from 11 overs so far.

  19. Ind 197-3published at 56 overs

Rajar Patidar looks entirely comfortable against England's spinners at the moment. He's shown really good foot movement in his short innings so far.

We're going to get a change at the other end. It's not Rehan Ahmed. It's Joe Root returning.

Had a bowl of cereal and some toast for breakfast. Going to school now so will have to wait for later to see the cricket result.
