Three balls! That's how long it took for the reverse sweep.

It's a quite extraodinary way to get out. James Anderson misses the ball originally, it hits his pad and on the follow-through of his swing, Anderson flicks it back towards wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.

Jurel reacts brilliantly to take the catch and Ashwin ends with five.

Jimmy Anderson walks out to the middle. How long until the reverse sweep?

England will take the overs with the ball tonight now.

    Foakes c&b Ashwin 17 (Eng 145-9)

Ben Foakes' stay is over. He has got a leading edge to the carrom ball - the one Ravichandran Ashwin flicks out of his hand as a surprise to turn the other way from normal - and chipped a catch straight back to the bowler.

India are a wicket away from having a bat.

I wonder if there is anywhere Ben Foakes can look for twos. Everyone remembers Ben Stokes' sixes in that famous Headingley innings but he also hit gaps and ran back and forth with Jack Leach.

As it is, Foakes is clearly happy with the rhythm he's in of taking one single from each over. India must feel it's not hurting them either.

Ranchi is hosting only its third Test match but the previous two were completed after three innings, so this will be the first fourth-innings chase on the ground.

India are really slowing things down. If they bowl the seven remaining overs before 11:00 GMT they'll have to keep going.

    The umpires are getting twitchy.

Sensible play by this pair. Time and more wear on the pitch is important.

    Foakes 16, Bashir 1

Ben Foakes gets that one to keep the strike.

    On we go.

The lead is 190 - another mini-milestone - but it's going to take 10 overs at this rate to get to 200.

Ben Foakes still needs to find his single...

    It is. Ben Foakes survives.

The first replay was conclusive, for me.

There's the tiniest smidge of a spike. Is it enough to overturn the decision?

I think there's a deviation as ball passes bat.

    We wait on Ultra-edge.

    Foakes is given lbw!

He failed to get his single on the fourth ball and from the fifth tries to force something with a reverse sweep.

Ashwin wheels away in celebration but there's a review.

Daniel: A lot of our middle order batsmen are simply not performing in this series, sadly including the captain. We are now relying on going deep to save us.

    Foakes 15, Bashir 1

Kuldeep, usually more a wanderer to the crease, bounds in this time after a sudden burst of energy. He's probably just trying to surprise the batters.

India appeal for a catch down the leg side after the final ball. Even Shoaib Bashir shakes his head.

Tom makes a good point from Finland. If England do get through this hour to the close, their bowlers will at least get a night with their feet up.

We're back under way after drinks.

Anyone else think Foakes is playing a blinder here? Taking the sting out, halting the emotional momentum, getting more wear in the pitch and more rest in England’s bowlers…
