Day one abandoned at Old Traffordpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 5 April

    Lancashire v Surrey

We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see how the Red Rose fare against the defending champions, as a shower in the last half hour or so has scuppered any chance of play at Old Trafford today.

Sigh. It's a tough gig in April.

  2. 50 runs

for Billy Rootpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 111-1

He may have played second fiddle to captain Sam Northeast, but Billy Root has done an excellent job for his team this morning.

He gets to his 50 with a boundary off Middlesex skip Toby Roland-Jones.

A Root scoring runs in England - despite the weather, a reassuring piece of news!

  3. rain stops play

Play abandoned for day at Durhampublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 5 April

    Durham v Hampshire

The sun may have appeared at Chester-le-Street, but the rain has wreaked its havoc.

Following a further inspection, the umpires have decided that the outfield is too wet for play.

  4. Postpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 40-1

Brett Hutton, who picked up stacks of wickets in the Championship last year, is finding a more consistent line now.

He has Tom Westley playing and missing and also has an LBW appeal turned down against Dean Elgar, who opted not to play a shot.

  5. Postpublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 111-1

Worcester pass 100 for one down in the 23rd over, as Rhodes drops a bit short and Kashif Ali cuts the ball away for four.

The sixth ball is wide and Ali cuts just over Barnard at point for four.

A bit streaky really, but fun to watch. Unless you're a bowler.

Four more - this time to Roderick, driving a very full ball from Barnard down the ground.

  6. Solid start for Pears at Edgbastonpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 99-1

Kashif Ali is beaten by an away swinger from Will Rhodes first up at the other end and subsequently survives an LBW shout (looked leg side) but survives a testing maiden over.

Former Pear Ed Barnard is on for his first spell of the season - and starts with a maiden of his own.

  7. 100 runs

up for Glamorganpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 100-1

And now Sam Northeast grabs a single to bring up the three figures for his team.

A good morning so far for the Welsh county.

WICKET: Khushi c Montgomery b Pennington 18published at 12:29 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 36-1

Notts' Dillon PenningtonImage source, Rex Features

First wicket in Notts colours for Dillon Pennington!

Credit to the paceman, who was clobbered for six by Feroze Khushi in his previous over and takes his revenge.

Pennington finds a bit of bounce and Khushi can only fend it off to first slip, where Matthew Montgomery grabs it safely.

That brings Essex skipper Tom Westley to the middle to join Dean Elgar.

  9. 50 runs

for Sam Northeastpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 99-1

Wow, there is no sign of rust in Sam Northeast's game. The first 50 of the county season.

A gorgeous shot down the ground off Toby Roland-Jones is followed by a couple to see him reach his half-century.

He has only needed 51 balls and hit 10 lovely fours. An excellent way to begin life as Glamorgan's red-ball captain.

Jim Dale: All change for Essex. Great to see a youngster like Khushi get a chance and for a world class player like Elgar to come into the team but sad not to see Cook and Browne open up. I hope we get to see Browne get a chance at some point though.

William Jennings: Can you please tell Walshey Wasp (11:48) to stop enjoying himself abroad? Plenty of stuff to do back here. His Cricket Club Secretary.

  11. 6 runs

First six of the season!published at 12:23 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 31-0

Essex's Feroze Khushi is the man who takes the honours here, latching onto a full-pitched delivery from Dillon Pennington and heaving him over the fence at mid-on.

Khushi takes the aerial route again later in the over and gets away with a top edge that flies down to the deep square leg fielder for a single.

He's outscoring Dean Elgar now, with 17 to 14.

  12. Postpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 94-1

Another bowling change at Edgbaston as Will Rhodes comes on in place of Michael Booth.

Kashif Ali works the fourth ball off his hip behind square for a single.

Rhodes pushes the ball out wider and Roderick leaves.

The run rate has dipped a bit, but remains very healthy after just 19 overs bowled.

  13. Washout at Derbyshirepublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 5 April

    Derbyshire v Gloucestershire

    BBC Radio Derby

    County Ground

BBC Radio Derby have been out to the County Ground for Derbyshire's first game of the County Championship today, which has been abandoned due to the weather.

The rain seems to have been a problem for a lot of clubs over the winter period and the groundsman at DCCC has said it's "one of the wettest he's ever seen in 30 years of working at Derbyshire."

He said Derbyshire have had similar weather to Edgbaston, which was around 30 inches on rain.

We've been told Nottinghamshire CCC have a better weather gage so can tell us more in-depth numbers about rain in the East Midlands, instead of taking numbers from Edgbaston.

  14. Postpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 92-1

Another edge from Kashif Ali, this time a thinner edge which flies past Jacob Bethell at second slip off Booth for four.

It may be worth reminding viewers that the Kookaburra ball is being used for this round of matches, which may account for a bit less movement this morning.

OHD is full and straight to get a rare defensive block in this Worcestershire innings.

The fourth ball is dabbed away behind square for a single by Ali.

  15. Postpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 21-0

Great fielding by another Nottinghamshire debutant, Jack Haynes, who launches himself full length on the long leg boundary to cut off a glance from Dean Elgar and save his side a run.

Elgar does pick up a boundary later in the over, however, punching Dillon Pennington to the fence on long on. The left-hander has 14 to his name, with Feroze Khushi on seven.

  16. Postpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 78-1

Successive fours for Glamorgan captain Sam Northeast off Tom Helm.

The second of which is a gorgeous shot through the covers and down the hill to the fence.

And he ends the over with an even better shot, a cover drive that is absolutely cracked to the boundary.

Plenty of intent from Northeast - he has 38 from 39 balls. This partnership is now worth 62.

  17. Postpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 83-1

Kashif Ali picks up his first boundary, driving Booth off a thick outside edge past point for four.

Maiden from OHD, bowling a much tidier second spell to date from the other end.

  18. Postpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 14-0

Dillon Pennington bowling for NottsImage source, Rex Features

Notts supporters get their first look at Dillon Pennington - as one of their own players, anyway - and it's a mixed first over from the seamer.

He gets one nipping past the outside edge of Feroze Khushi, but also pitches a ball up that the opener clips off his pads for his first boundary of the season. Decent start for Essex.

  19. 'I thought it was a very short boundary'published at 12:06 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwcks v Worcs 77-1

    Phil Britt
    BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

Jack Libby has sorted of fetched that ball from outside, almost short outside the off-stump and couldn't control it.

For a moment I thought with the very short boundary, he got enough on it, but in the end he was caught, a good diving catch.

David Collicutt: Good [early] morning from Los Angeles. Set the alarm to catch the opening day. Shame about the weather. #bbccricket

Cricket Reformation: My hope for the season is that players who score lots of runs like Hain, Bohannon and Rew get selected on merit and not overlooked for their playing style or golfing ability.
