  1. Play begins at Trent Bridgepublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Notts v Essex 8-0

We're under way now and it's the perfect start to his Essex career for Dean Elgar.

The former South Africa left-hander gets a gentle half-volley from Brett Hutton first up and gratefully creams it to the boundary.

Three more for Elgar later in the over, while opening partner Feroze Khushi is also off the mark with a single to mid-off.

  2. wicket

WICKET Libby c Briggs b Booth 38published at 12:01 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 77-1

Maiden first class scalp for Michael Booth - and what a catch!

Warwickshire get their first strike on the hour as Jake Libby top edges a pull and Danny Briggs runs in from the deep mid wicket rope to pouch the ball just above the turf.

Libby had a couple of lives this morning, but he goes this time for a well made 38.

The Pears number three is Kashif Ali.

  3. dropped catch

Dropped catch at Lord'spublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 57-1

Tough chance, but Billy Root survives.

He edged Tom Helm towards third slip but Leus du Plooy, diving to his right, was unable to hang on.

    Frustration for Middlesex.

  4. Postpublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 77-0

Is spin an option before lunch here at Edgbaston?

Danny Briggs and Jacob Bethell could oblige.

Four more to Libby, driving Booth with a thick outside edge through point to move to 37.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby is back after a short spell this morning where his rhythm wasn't quite 100%.

Libby drives a single through the off side and Roderick just beats the return throw, which is a direct hit.

The fourth ball is speared away down the leg side for four byes.

  5. Early lunch at Headingleypublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Yorkshire v Leicestershire

Rather inconclusive news coming from Leeds.

There will be a further pitch inspection at 13:10 BST, but in the meantime, an early lunch is going to be taken at 12:30.

  6. 50 runs

up for Glamorganpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 50-1

Sam Northeast is riding his luck with a couple of edges, but the Glamorgan skipper is tucking into some very wayward bowling by Tom Helm.

Northeast has slashed outside off stump to earn a couple of boundaries and he's moved on to 21 from 24 balls, with Billy Root on 28 at the other end.

  7. Postpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 67-0

Plenty for Warwickshire captain Alex Davies to ponder after winning the toss and bowling in apparently favourable conditions in which the Pears have virtually plundered a run a ball.

Libby is confidently on the back foot to Rushworth, driving through cover for four more runs.

The fifth ball is driven between cover and mid off for four more.

67 in 12 overs. Dare we say Bazball?

  8. 'Supporters will do well to see the day out'published at 11:49 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Glamorgan 44-1 v Middlesex

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

The wind may be buffeting the players and spectators at Lord’s but at least we were under way on time as Toby Roland-Jones had no hesitation in bowling first, even though the wicket is not as green as expected.

Glamorgan fielded a new opening partnership with Billy Root boosted up the order to join Zain Ul Hassan because of injury to Eddie Byrom, but it was Ul Hassan who fell first for five as Ethan Bamber induced an edge behind the wicket.

With Roland-Jones having a battery of five seamers plus spinner Josh De Caires, Glamorgan will do well to bat the day out after a rain-hit pre-season.

Supporters will also do well to see the day out given the windy conditions, but few will grumble at having live action back.

The weather must be better in Italy than here in the UK!!

  10. 50 runs

partnership for Pears openerspublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 58-0

Michael Booth is a tad short and Libby cuts into the off side - and even on this slow outfield that's still going for four.

The 50 partnership with Roderick comes in just 62 balls.

  11. Postpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 39-1

First bowling change for Middlesex, with wicket-taker Ethan Bamber replaced by Tom Helm and it's an eventful opening over for the tall seamer.

Helm's first delivery is edged through the slips for four by Billy Root, his second looks like a good LBW shout but fails to impress the umpire and the next is dispatched to the boundary.

The final ball of the over seams, bounces and whizzes just over the top of Root's stumps but overall Glamorgan will be fairly happy with this start.

  12. Close call for Libbypublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 48-0

Another Jake Libby edge - this time off Chris Rushworth and that ball did just about carry to Dan Mousley.

    But he can't hang on.

Libby clips the last ball of the over to mid wicket for two runs to move on to 21.

  13. Nottinghamshire win toss and bowlpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Notts v Essex

Good start for new Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed - he wins the toss in his first game!

Unsurprisingly, Hameed asks Essex to bat first, so Dean Elgar will get to business straight away, opening alongside Feroze Khushi.

Ex-Worcestershire pair Jack Haynes and Dillon Pennington both make their debuts for Notts.

  14. Postpublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 42-0

Another superb over from Rushworth, bowling a tight line and forcing Roderick into defence.

Just ten runs from his four overs this morning.

As I suspected, OHD is having a break and Michael Booth is in the attack.

His second ball swings away late and is edged wide of the slips by Jake Libby for four. The fourth is edged just short of Dan Mousley at second slip.

    And breathe.

  15. Postpublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 30-1

Lovely stroke from Billy Root, driving Ethan Bamber down the ground for four and the left-hander cuts later in the over, but is denied a second boundary by the slow outfield.

Root has progressed to 19, with Sam Northeast punching his first boundary through cover to move on to six.

  16. What happened in 2023?published at 11:37 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    #bbccricket

While play tentatively gets under way on this opening morning of the 2024 season, it's worth having a quick recap at what happened in the County Championship last summer.

    County champions: Surrey

Relegated from Div One: Middlesex & Northamptonshire

Promoted from Div Two: Durham & Worcestershire

Leading run-scorer Div One: Josh Bohannon, Lancashire - 1,257 runs

Leading wicket-taker Div One: Brett Hutton, Nottinghamshire - 62 wickets

Leading run-scorer Div Two: Alex Lees, Durham - 1,347 runs

Leading wicket-taker Div Two: Ben Raine, Durham - 60 wickets

Surrey picked up their second County Championship title in a row and their third in six seasons. In defending their title they became the first side to do so since Yorkshire in 2015.

Essex ran them the closest and the champagne was on ice until the afternoon of the penultimate day of the season when Essex failed to secure batting bonus points at Northampton.

The battle to avoid the drop was far closer and the drama extended until the final hour of the final day of the season.

There were tense scenes at Canterbury long after third-bottom Kent shook hands on a rain-affected draw with Lancashire.

The result left the door ajar for Middlesex, who needed a win at Trent Bridge to survive. A seemingly generous declaration left Notts needing only 207 from 58 overs on the final afternoon, but nerves were jangling from the Garden of England to the East Midlands when Notts slid to 157-7 and then lost their eighth wicket with five runs still needed.

But they just about kept their heads to get over the line and send Middlesex down with basement-boys Northants, while Kent survived.

  17. Postpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 35-0

OHD is struggling a bit for his best rhythm, which is disrupted somewhat by a strong crosswind here at Edgbaston.

He's pulled out of four deliveries so far and he's only in his fourth over.

His fifth ball of the over is full, leg side and clipped away behind square for four.

  18. wicket

WICKET: Ul Hassan c Davies b Bamber 5published at 11:27 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 16-1

First wicket of the new season!

Middlesex's Ethan Bamber is the man who claims that honour, getting the ball to nip away from Zain ul Hassan and take a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Jack Davies.

Glamorgan's new red-ball captain Sam Northeast strides out to join Billy Root at the crease.

  19. Postpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 5 April 2024

    Warwks v Worcs 29-0

We have a short mid wicket in for Chris Rushworth now, as he bowls back of a length to Gareth Roderick.

Definitely a bit of movement out there with the new ball.

Rushworth tempts the opener with a bit more width and Roderick punches the ball off the back foot through cover for four.

Ooh, the sun is out. It's not all bad news today, you know.
