It's been a frustrating day for some of the shires - with no play in Durham or Derbyshire for the second day running.

But there has been so much drama to enjoy as well.

Essex, led by Sam Cook's hat-trick fought back strongly against Notts at Trent Bridge while Cameron Steel took a career-best 5-25 as Surrey began the defence of their title by bowling out Lancashire for just 202.

But the big headline of the day belongs to Glamorgan captain Sam Northeast.

He scored a magnificent 335 not out against Middlesex, eclipsing the Lord's record first-class score of Graham Gooch which has stood since 1990, when the great England opener scored 333 against India.

What a fab day. Tune in for more drama tomorrow.

Thanks for your company. See you at 10.45 BST.

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 65-1

Nightwatchman and hat-trick hero Sam Cook hits a four in the last over, then nicks a single off the last ball and will take strike when they resume on Sunday.

    Essex lead by 25.

  5. 'Notts needed that wicket'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 6 April

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 54-1

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Very much an important wicket, a great catch by Matthew Montgomery, who caught Feroze Khushi in the first innings.

    Notts needed that.

  6. Close of playpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202 v Surrey 11-0

Tom Hartley concedes a four off his second ball as Dom Sibley pushes him through the off side, and he appeals for LBW off the last but Surrey survive.

The hover cover is on before the players cross the rope, and we are done for the day at Old Trafford.

  7. 'Batters very much in control'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 6 April

    Middlesex 138-1 v Glamorgan 620-3 dec

    Roland Butcher
Former Middlesex and England batter on BBC Radio London

The pitch might be the winner here from what we've seen so far, one wicket in a day and a half

That tells you just how good this pitch is and how difficult it is to get wickets.

We came so close to not having a wicket fall in the whole day.

There is not much in it for the bowlers here let me tell you, we've seen both teams operate on this pitch and I think Dan Douthwaite has been the most likely wicket taker on both sides really.

He's caused a little bit of problems with his extra bit of pace, he's also bowled a good line and length.

But I think genuinely the batters have been very much in control.

  8. Postpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202 v Surrey 7-0

That familar pleading appeal from Nathan Lyon is seen for the first time, but Rory Burns survives the LBW claim and carries on.

Tom Hartley will bowl the final over of the day.

  9. wicket

WICKET - Khushi c Montgomery b James 32published at 18:54 British Summer Time 6 April

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 53-1

Notts have their first wicket, Lyndon James getting Feroze Khushi to prod outside his off stump, with the edge flying to Matthew Montgomery at first slip.

  10. Close of playpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 6 April

    Yorkshire 72-2 v Leicestershire 354

We have one over of leg spin from Rehan Ahmed before the players and umpires come together.

And that is it for the day. The light has come in and we end four overs early at Headingley.

Ben Mike's 90 and two late wickets have really given Leicestershire a firm foothold in this match.

  11. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 6 April

    Warwks 292-5 v Worcs 360

Another light meter reading. With one over left.

    Nathan Smith WILL bowl.

Burgess tries to work a leg side ball through midwicket but there's no run.

Burgess is forward to defend. Smith fields off his bowling, aims to throw the ball to the keeper...and drops it!

Burgess pushes the last ball safely along the ground to mid-on and that's stumps.

Worcestershire's players will be happy with that session of play, which threatened to get away from them at times.

Either side of a close LBW call which ended Ed Barnard's fine innings of 89, Warwickshire frittered wickets away.

A very risky ramp shot by Will Rhodes to a Nathan Smith bumper lofted a catch to Jason Holder.

Then we had the horrid run out of Jacob Bethell.

Bethell looked comfortable as night-watchman before a top-edged sweep over the keeper's head.

He got away with one run as the ball dribbled away to third man, but the second attempted one was well short after a neat pick up and throw by Nathan Smith to Worcester keeper Gareth Roderick.

Warwickshire trail by just 68 with the new ball one over away.

  12. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202 v Surrey 3-0

Nathan Lyon's first over in county cricket with Lancashire sees the great Australian nurdled around for three runs as the lights come into full effect.

  13. 'Garry' Lyon to take new ballpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202 v Surrey 0-0

The lights are on at Old Trafford, and we could have five overs tonight.

Tom Bailey takes the new ball, and Rory Burns sees out a testing first over.

Nathan Lyon will take the second over, bowling to Dom Sibley at the James Anderson End.

  14. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 6 April

    Middlesex 138-1 v Glamorgan 620-3 dec

James Harris to bowl the last over of the day to Max Holden.

It's a maiden and Middlesex go to stumps just one wicket down with Mark Stoneman on 62 not out.

But this is Sam Northeast's day.

A historic 335 not out to post highest first-class score ever at the Home of Cricket.

  15. Postpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202 v Surrey

Dan Lawrence took 4-91, and Cameron Steel grabbed a career-best 5-25, his first five-wicket haul; and it looks like Nathan Lyon and Tom Hartley are warming up to bowl, probably due to the murky light at Old Trafford.

  16. Postpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 6 April

    Warwks 292-5 v Worcs 360

Jake Libby is full and Mousley taps to mid on for one.

The next ball is wide of off and slapped though cover by Burgess for one.

Mousley is carefully forward to block out the over.

  17. wicket

WICKET - Lyon c Overton b Steel 0published at 18:36 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202 v Surrey

    Er, like I was saying...

Nathan Lyon prods at Steel, and the ball flies into Jamie Overton's hands at first slip to give the leggie a five-fer and the Aussie off-spinner a golden duck.

Lancashire signed him for his bowling, and we might, just might, see him in action tonight.

  18. Postpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 6 April

    Warwks 290-5 v Worcs 360

Nathan Smith is back in the attack and tries to tempt Burgess outside off but the keeper-batsman leaves the ball alone.

Just a single off the over. Two overs remaining.

  19. wicket

WICKET - Williams c Overton b Steel 8published at 18:34 British Summer Time 6 April

    Lancs 202-9 v Surrey

The Steel-Overton combo works again as Will Williams edges the leggie to first slip for a comfortable catch low down.

Which brings in Nathan Lyon - can he conjure up one of those annoying little innings he often pulls out for Australia against England?

  20. wicket

WICKET Bethell run out (Smith-Roderick) 12published at 18:30 British Summer Time 6 April

    Warwks 289-5 v Worcs 360

    Calamity for the Bears!

Jacob Bethell gets away with a top edged sweep over the keeper's head off the bowling of Jake Libby, but the second run was never on!

The ball is picked up comfortably inside the rope by Nathan Smith and the return throw to Gareth Roderick is spot on.

A needless wicket is frittered away and Michael Burgess will have to try and bat out the session.
