Pantano is about 300m behind the leader - Zakarin should have this in the bag.

Ilnur Zakarin has 1km to survive to win the stage.

The bad news? It's the steepest part of the route - grit your teeth my friend.

Alejandro Valverde is a team player. He's set the pace for team-mate Nairo Quintana and now has to drop off the peloton.

But Quintana has no Movistar buddies around him - if he wants to attack, he'll have to do it himself.

Dan Martin is now caught by the group after that attack.

    1.4km to go

Dan Martin attacks off the front of the peloton. Dilemma for Chris Froome - Martin is ninth in the yellow jersey rankings. Surely not a big enough threat to chase?

Froome, dare I say it, looks a little heavy on the wheels.

    But doesn't he always?

  5. Movistar movepublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    2.2km to go

    Movistar. Finally?

With Astana gone, Alejandro Valverde moves to the front and Sergio Henao of Team Sky drops off the back of the peloton. He has one team-mate with him.

Valverde seems happy with that and drops off to chat with team-mate Quintana

    It's attritional.

    2.5km to go

Ilnur Zakarin is starting to show signs of cracking at the front of the race - he's still holding off Pantano.

  7. Astana muck it uppublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    Oh this is a shambles.

Astana do all that work to increase the pace, Nibali handed over to Rosa and now Rosa hands over to Fabio Aru, a if to say, "off you go son".

Instead, Aru looks across, confused, like a dog that's been shown a card trick, and allows Team Sky to take the initiative.

Astana's aim is to force riders to drop off the peloton with this increase in pace - but most are staying strong.

  9. Postpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    3.7km to go

Vincenzo Nibali has done his job at the front of the peloton and drops off the pace, handing over responsibility to Astana team-mate Diego Rosa.

This was the view the peloton saw a few moments ago, before they began the epic climb up to Finhaut-Emosson.

  11. Landa droppedpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    4.8km to go

The peloton are in single file, with Vicenzo Nibali at the front and his Astana team-mates following behind.

Then it's Team Sky queueing behind them, but they lose another rider as Mikel Landa is dropped. I make that three Team Sky team-mates with Chris Froome.

What is Nairo Quintana thinking? Will this Astana move help him? Is there an Astana-Movistar allegiance?

Tom Oxley: My favourite teams are all now defunct, Euskaltel Euskadi (all Basque), Raleigh Banana and Banesto (home of Indurain)

Chris Brown: All about entertainment. Fan of Quintana, Tommy V great, Sagan superb. Cheered them all up #Ventoux. Wouldnt do same at footy

Wittering: Now Cav is out I can get on with some guilt-free supporting of my main man, Sagan. Swoon..thud..

It's the hair, isn't it? All that lovely, shiny hair.

  13. Zakarin zooming, againpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    5.6km to go

Zakarin and Pantano are now having a chat after that burst - I wonder if they're considering if that was worth it.

Oh, hold on, Zakarin has gone again and Pantano doesn't have the puff to stick with the Russian.

It's a move that could win the stage, or finish him off.

    6.2km to go

Not only has Ilnur Zakarin caught the front two, he's decided to leave them for dead. Rafal Majka can't keep up, Jarlinson Pantano recovers and clings on.

So, the peloton, with Chris Froome and his rivals, are 10mins behind the breakaway.

The winner will almost definitely come from that breakaway, which now has Ilnur ZAkarin alongside Jarlinson Pantano and Rafal Majka.

There are plenty of riders dotted between the two groups.

Astana fancy it. The light blue jerseys get to the front of the peloton and they're going quickly. There's daylight between them and the group momentarily - Team Sky respond.

Felipe Iglesias: I used to support Euskaltel Euskadi as a team. But I've always supported cyclists individually.

Mark Gardner: I support @TeamSky for how they have changed face of cycling in UK and they are tactical masters at #TDF2016 as with other tours

Stagnant: No. Why support a team? Sky are the #Chelsea of cycling aka boring. Better to support the individual. @MarkCavendish @petosagan
