So Astana, Trek and Bahrain-Merida play it perfectly to shed the lone riders Calmejane and Majka.

Cort Nielsen, Mollema and Izagirre have built a lead of 22 seconds over the rest with 5km to go.

Mollema and Izagirre really won't want to bring the fast-finishing Cort Nielsen to the line.

The peloton are driving on, nearly 14 minutes back on the road. No attacks on Geraint Thomas so far, Team Sky are setting the tempo. Could they even put their rivals under pressure?

Izagirre and Cort Nielsen bridge across to Mollema.

Valgren won't chase his team-mate and so Calmejane has to take up the chase.

Skujins and Pozzovivo won't chase their team-mates either - so it's up to Majka too.

But the Pole looks cooked after his earlier effort, as does Calmejane.

  3. 7.5km to gopublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Pozzovivo makes a dig off the front - the Italian climber really doesn't want this coming down to a sprint.

He's caught and then drifts to the back as team-mate Izagirre goes.

A brief lull and then Bauke Mollema attacks!

  4. Postpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Domenico Pozzovivo, Michael Valgren, Magnus Cort Nielsen and Toms Skujins have never won a Tour de France stage.

Rafal Majka has won three, while Lilian Calmejane, Bauke Mollema and Ion Izagirre have won one each.

  5. 10km to gopublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

The leading eight-man group have just 10km left of stage 15 to go.

Plenty of cat and mouse left to be played. A Tour stage win the prize.

It's a brave move but I wonder if Dan Martin really needed to do that. Would he have been better saving his legs and going on the attack in the Pyrenees next week?

  7. Martin caughtpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

A brave dig by Dan Martin for he is duly caught by the peloton nearing the end of the descent of the Pic de Nore.

The peloton, containing all the favourites, have 22km to race and are 13'16'' down on the leading group.

  8. Postpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

So here are the eight riders out front: Lilian Calmejane (Direct-Energie), Rafal Majka (Bora), Ion Izagirre and Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida), Michael Valgren and Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana), Bauke Mollema and Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo).

Cort Nielsen is the fastest sprinter in that bunch so Astana would be happy for it all to stay together to the finish, while the others will want to split the group.

Can Astana make it two in two days? Omar Fraile won stage 14 yesterday.

  9. Majka caughtpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

    15km to go

Rafal Majka sits up and joins in with the chasing pack.

So that's eight riders out front to compete for the stage win.

About 13 minutes back down the road, Dan Martin catches Peter Sagan.

Martin is only 10 seconds in front of the peloton now though.

Once it comes back together, this is an intriguing eight-man group.

Majka and Calmejane are isolated but the other six riders are in pairs - Skujins and Mollema (Trek), Valgren and Cort Nielsen (Astana), Izagirre and Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida).

How will they play their cards?

  11. 18km to gopublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Rafal Majka leads the seven chasers by 14 seconds.

I don't think the Pole will stay away now. Can he latch on when the catch is made though?

  12. Postpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

These are conditions that Quick-Step love.

Team Sky might not be so keen. Could anyone split the peloton apart in the crosswinds?

Dan Martin has 30km to go but is now just 34 seconds in front of the peloton.

Some 13 minutes up the road, Rafal Majka has 20km to go and his lead is down to 17 seconds.

  14. Postpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

There are currently some hefty crosswinds on the flat run-in to Carcassonne.

Rafal Majka is just about to exit the descent - that wind should allow the chasers to pull him back.

It could also split apart the peloton if they're not careful.

  15. Postpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Rafal Majka has just over 200m on the chasing pack of seven riders.

He takes a look over his shoulder - they're not there yet, with the Pole able to stay out of sight for now on these sweeping bends.

  16. Postpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Dan Martin's lead over the peloton is down to 45 seconds on the descent.

  17. 25km to gopublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Rafal Majka drives on but his gap is down to 20 seconds over the seven chasers now.

Romain Bardet has a bit of a wobble round a corner on the descent as he tries to push the tempo.

There are wet patches on the road, which makes it a touch more precarious.

Just that last little bit of the route map to go now. The break and the main favourites are up and over the Pic de Nore.

A fast descent followed by a flat run into Carcassonne to end the day...

Team Sky lead the main bunch over the summit, Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome safely shepherded over all the climbs for the day.

They'll just need a safe run-in to Carcassonne now and there should be no shake-up at the top of the GC.

Will anyone try anything on the descent?

  20. Postpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 22 July 2018

Dan Martin his the summit of the Pic de Nore and is onto the descent.

The peloton, reduced to the overall favourites and their key lieutenants, are kicking up the narrow upper slopes, about a minute down on Martin.
