But on this crucial GC day, I'll give the closing word to stage winner Simon Yates.

The Briton exuded class in getting into the break, forcing the selection and then riding everyone off his wheel to take his second stage of this Tour.

This enthralling Tour takes another turn.

Who will have the best final week and claim the yellow jersey?

Julian Alaphilippe has the time advantage, but looked very much like a man who is starting to realise the very high mountains are beyond his capabilities.

Thibaut Pinot looks the best climber. Ineos can play Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal as a one-two punch.

Then Jumbo-Visma have looked very strong in support of Steven Kruijswijk.

The race for yellow is going to be a belter.

Yellow jersey Julian Alaphilippe: "My team did a great job to to protect the lead and I'm really happy to stay in yellow.

"It's one more day in yellow. I'm happy, it was my goal to keep it and I'm still the leader for the rest day but it will be a very hard last week.

"I just want to enjoy this. I just have to focus on me. For the GC, the next week will be a big question. I'm already really happy with what's happened.

"I have training, press conference and want to see my family tomorrow but hopefully I can then rest a bit."

That's interesting from Geraint Thomas - he felt he couldn't attack and risk bringing other GC contenders back up to Egan Bernal.

But then Bernal wasn't working with Thibaut Pinot because he didn't want to distance Thomas.

What is it about this team and questions about who is the real leader?

Geraint Thomas, speaking to ITV4: "I felt better than yesterday but I needed to try to pace it when it all kicked off. Wout was really good but then I got stuck behind Alaphilippe. We had to let him ride a bit and then I jumped.

"It's a difficult one, tactics wise - I wanted to go, I had the legs to go but I wasn't going to chase down Egan Bernal with Alaphilippe on my wheel.

"I've no idea what Steven Kruijswijk said to me - I just told him we wouldn't pull with Alaphilippe on the wheel. Then Steven attacked, which was good but Alaphilippe stuck with again.

"I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, I had to wait a few kilometres and that gave Thibaut Pinot time but at least the leg are responding really well.

"Pinot is going really well but there are so many guys that are still so strong."

A supreme effort by Simon Yates to bounce back from a disappointing Giro d'Italia to win two stages of this Tour.

He's salvaged it for Mitchelton-Scott too, with twin brother Adam fading from GC contention.

Stage winner Simon Yates: "I'm very proud of what I did there. It was extremely hard from the start to the finish today but I raced how I like to, which is aggressive and I managed to pull it off.

"Today was the other day I had a chance for the stage win and I took it with both hands.

"Adam Was not so great yesterday but he's a great rider and I'm sure he'll be back.

"I was worried the GC guys were catching me and I was trying to increase the gap to the bottom of the climb - Simon Geschke was a great companion on the flat and the descent but I had to go at that point because I wasn't confident of staying away.

"That took a lot of effort and I'm very tried now but there might be more chances, we'll see."

Julian Alaphilippe was in absolute bits at the finish.

He had to lean on a barrier to keep himself upright and was sick by the side of the road.

His reward is keeping the yellow jersey into the second rest day.

Geraint Thomas made up 32 seconds on Julian Alaphilippe today.

But Thibaut Pinot is now just 15 seconds behind Thomas.

Julian Alaphilippe digs deep and will retain the yellow jersey.

But he's lost about 25 seconds to Geraint Thomas.

Thomas, Kruijswijk and Valverde approach the line. They lose about 50 seconds to Pinot.

Buchmann and Bernal finish, about 16 seconds back on Pinot.

Pinot finishes second, 34 seconds down on Yates, Landa third.
