  3. 'Impeccable and improbable' fightbackpublished at 23:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 5-7 Wright

Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle on Wright's fightback and triumph:

"It was impeccable and improbable the way he responded.

"But the words of encouragement for Michael Smith, you could see they were so heartfelt and Peter was getting so emotional for him.

"I think that's why Peter is so well liked. He's impossible to dislike, he's a consummate professional in everything he does.

"He found a gear there that maybe only one or two players on the planet could find."

Big show of respect between the players as Wright says he expects Smith to trounce the rest of the tour once he breaks that major duck.

  10. 'I'll be back on the board'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 5-7 Wright

Runner-up Michael Smith to Sky Sports:

"I got five sets instead of three this time!" he joked, referencing his previous final defeat by Michael van Gerwen.

"I must have done somethig terrible in a past life because he's (Peter's) doing my head in now - I'll have a bad night but I'll definitely be back on the board and getting ready for the next one.

"I kept fighting back but in the end that bullseye wouldn't go in."

Michael Smith gets a standing ovation from the crowd before his post-match interview.

The St Helens thrower had his back turned a few minutes ago, clearly shedding tears at a devastating final defeat, his second in four years after also losing to Michael van Gerwen.

Got to be honest, I thought Wright was a bit hard on himself and Smith in that interview - the final started off pretty poorly with lots of missed doubles but grew into a classic.

World champion Peter Wright tells Sky Sports:

"Obviously I'm over the moon. Me and Mike didn't perform how we can, I can't explain what went wrong for 90% of the match. I just kept swapping darts and trying to find something.

"The atmosphere in here was affecting my darts badly, it affected Michael's as well. It will be Michael's turn soon.

"We were both playing so bad, we had patches of two or three legs but that was it.

"It was really strange the atmosphere in here tonight, my darts were going everywhere but luckily enough I won."

Alex Haworth: Smith won't get over that one for a while. He threw it away. Should never have been 5-5.

That ninth set was huge - Wright came from 2-0 down in that set and never looked back.

The consolation of a £200,000 runners-up cheque and the crowd chanting his name for Michael Smith but the poor fella is almost in tears.

Champion Peter Wright looks equally emotional as he lifts the World Championship trophy.

    What a final.

Andrew Priestley: Wright turned the screw at the critical moment and sailed on home into the sunset. Smith had no response in those final 2 sets.

    Smith 5-7 Wright

    Michael Smith looks inconsolable.

There's nothing he could have done. I'm not sure even Phil Taylor in his prime could have lived with Wright in those final three sets. Unplayable.

What an unbelievable performance from Peter Wright from 5-4 down - virtually flawless darts.
