The crowd goes wild as Wright pins double 14 a 148 checkout! The first ton plus checkout in the match!

  2. Wright breakspublished at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-1 (1-2) Wright

    Double disaster for Smith.

Not only did he fail to break Peter Wright in the previous leg, he's now had his throw broken.

There seemed little danger with Wright on 148 but treble 20, treble 20, double 14 and bang, Smith is well up against it.

  3. Doubles deserting Smithpublished at 20:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-1 (1-1) Wright

I would love to see Michael Smith's doubles percentage in this final so far - it has to be mega low.

He misses three darts to break Peter Wright's throw and the Scot levels things up in this second set.

  4. First blood for Wrightpublished at 20:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Siân Price
    BBC Sport at Alexandra Palace

Wright is using the darts he won the World Matchplay with this year and he looks comfortable with them tonight.

  5. Smith holdspublished at 20:41 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-1 (1-0) Wright

Decent response from St Helens' Michael Smith at the start of the second set as he holds his throw, albeit again after missing doubles.

  6. Rankings updatepublished at 20:37 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Siân Price

If Michael Smith wins the title tonight he will move up to third in the world, overtaking Michael van Gerwen.

If Peter Wright wins tonight, he will stay second but will be only £15,250 off the top spot held by Gerwyn Price on the darts Order of Merit.

The Scot punishes those misses - landing D8 after missing D16 himself.

What a nervy opening set that was, both players missing more doubles in four games than they would usually miss in four sets.

  8. Postpublished at 20:34 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-0 (1-2) Wright

Despite those early 180s, Smith has not settled - Wright has a chance to break throw and win the set.

But, no, he misses a dart at D16.

Then Smith misses two at D20 and D10.

  9. Wright holdspublished at 20:32 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-0 (1-2) Wright

A far more routine third leg as Wright holds with D4.

Touch of class from 2021 champion Gerwyn Price - who will be relinquishing his crown within the next couple of hours.

But will it be his quarter-final conqueror Michael Smith who succeeds the Welshman?

And now, the 2019 champion Peter Wright is introduced.

Always love seeing what hairdo he brings to the table.

Wright's wife Joanne is a hairdresser and spends several hours perfecting his mohawk prior to games - it's a bright red effort tonight for 'Snakebite'.

Here we go, the players are being introduced into the arena and first up is the 'pretender to the throne' - former world youth champion Michael Smith.

Scott Smith: Smith playing some great stuff but will the experience of Wright see him to the title? Going for the Bully Boy to just edge it.

Fenners: Would love bully boy to win it, but think Snakebite's consistency will see him through. 7-5 Wright, but come on bully boy!

Darren S: I've picked the final winner correctly since 2014 but tonight is a very tough one. Smith seems to have a better mental attitude about him but I think Wright's experience will tell. 7-5 to Wright is my prediction!
