Is this a turning point in the match? Smith will be more settled and feeling the nerves less now he's levelled the match at 2-2 at the first break in play rather than going into it 3-1 down.

  5. Smith levels up at two sets allpublished at 21:10 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 2-2 Wright

Smith misses one dart at a double but Wright misses two! Then Bully Boy lands D10 nervelessly to level matters at two sets all!

What a fightback from the ninth seed.

  6. Postpublished at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 1-2 (2-2) Wright

A huge 140 from Smith leaves 76 to take the set but Wright responds with 180 to leave 46!

  7. Postpublished at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 1-2 (2-2) Wright

Snakebite holds his throw, relatively comfortably.

Huge deciding leg now in this fourth set.

  8. Postpublished at 21:05 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 1-2 (2-1) Wright

Where Smith was earlier wasteful (terribly wasteful), now he's clinical.

    D16? No bother.

Now both players begin the next leg with 180s. Captivating.

  9. Postpublished at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 1-2 (1-1) Wright

Peter Wright threatens a nine-darter in the second game of the fourth set. It falls short with the sixth dart but he holds comfortably.

Big set now this - huge difference between 3-1 and 2-2.

  10. Support for Smithpublished at 21:01 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

The crowd are getting louder and louder here every time Smith gets a checkout. The Englishman has the crowd behind him tonight- is it going to give him the edge?

  11. Postpublished at 21:01 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 1-2 (1-0) Wright

    Oh, Smith is motoring now.

A 180 puts him in pole position.

But, hang on, Wright is on 170... treble 20, treble 20... and in inch away from the bull!

Smith tidies up, hitting a treble 20 and D10 to take out an 80 checkout. He was missing those doubles earlier.

  12. Smith takes third setpublished at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 1-2 Wright

    Cracking effort from Bully Boy.

That 167 finish proves crucial as he holds his throw by hitting D13 to pull within a set.

  13. Sensational from Smith!published at 20:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Is this the turning point??

Bully Boy hits the final's biggest finish thus far - treble 20, treble 19 and bullseye - to break the Wright throw.

He's throwing for the set now.

  15. Postpublished at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-2 (1-1) Wright

Good response from Smith as he hits D20 to hold - but even then he needed two darts at the double.

  16. Postpublished at 20:54 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-2 (0-1) Wright

    He really does, Sian.

But no immediate sight of that happening in set three as Wright routinely holds his throw in the opening game by hitting D4.

  17. Bullseye!published at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Siân Price
    BBC Sport at Alexandra Palace

Wright hits the bullseye right in the middle to take 124 - his second ton-plus checkout of the match. Smith must get on the board and win the next set.

  18. Postpublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

Michael Smith's doubling success ratio is 10% thus far.

Obviously the World final pressure is a different scenario but that ratio won't win you a game at the Dog & Duck let alone the Ally Pally.

  19. Postpublished at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

Michael Smith has plenty of support inside and outside Alexandra Palace tonight - but the way the first two sets have gone, he's going to need all the help he can get.

  20. Wright wins second set with bull finishpublished at 20:48 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Smith 0-2 Wright

Smith is scoring well but he can't hit the outer ring.

Wright was struggling himself earlier but, wow, he's put that behind him.

He follows up the 148 checkout in the previous leg with a 124 by finishing with a bullseye and that's two sets to nil for the Scot, both by a 3-1 margin.
