What a start to the evening then as seven-time Premier League winner Michael van Gerwen fails to add to his 15 points from the first four nights.

MVG's checkout percentage was also much higher at 60%, compared to 28.6%.

Result: Luke Humphries 6-3 Michael van Gerwen

MVG hits 171 with his three darts but then it all gets a bit scruffy again.

This is very good from the world champion and number one Luke Humphries.

He needed that because he'd missed 13 darts at doubles so far.

What Luke can't do is get annoyed with himself. The one dart he threw there, there was annoyance in it, that he should be 5-1 rather than 3-3.

A brilliant 134, including two treble 19s, leaves just 47 and he takes it out in two darts.

It's a 14-dart leg but it is a crucial one.

Michael van Gerwen has been serenaded by the Exeter crowd and "Cool Hand" Luke Humphries is also up on the stage.

The reception for the world number one was more mixed to be honest.

I'm going for Luke Humphries. He's playing way better than his results are showing. Things will turn around.

It's not been explosive form, he's had a bit of luck and survived match darts, but he's found a way to win. It's up to the other players to find a way to beat him.

He's so experienced in this format, he normally gets it right. The only thing stopping him, you feel, is himself.

Michael van Gerwen made it three successive nightly wins in the Premier League with a 6-4 victory over Nathan Aspinall in Newcastle.

Seven-time champion Van Gerwen has an eight-point lead at the top of the table after wins in Berlin and Glasgow.

He beat Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Luke Littler in a last-leg decider.

Aspinall came into the night without a match win in this year's Premier League but beat Michael Smith and Rob Cross.

Van Gerwen told Sky Sports: "I love those gold trophies! It's good to win like I did. People think it's easy but it's not easy. All the pressure, you have to deal with it all the time.

"I'm not going to give myself any targets. I'm going week by week, no targets, no goals, just keep focussing otherwise I get bored.

"I don't know how many nights I can win, I don't want to give myself a target but it could be a record [number of weekly wins] this year."

After four nights, reigning champion Michael van Gerwen is running away with things and already looks set to qualify for the play-offs in May.

He has won the past three nights, after Michael Smith claimed the opening evening. Van Gerwen come make history tonight by becoming the first player to win four nights in a row.

Nathan Aspinall got off the mark with a run to the final in week four, but Peter Wright has been knocked out in the quarter-finals every week so far. His form has been improving, though.

A reminder that the top four reach the play-offs at the end of the 16 weeks.
