British swimmer Tully Kearney speaking to Channel 4 ahead of the Games: "It's quite unusual in Para-sports to keep going after disability progresses. I've gone from S9 to S5 and not often are people able to continue.

"I can no longer dive in. I don't get as much push-off from the side. I now have limited range of movement from both my shoulders.

"It's been really hard. Since Rio, I lost all my funding and had to re-learn how to swim again.

"During Covid, I bought myself a steel pool for my back garden. I needed it with my dystonia (a neurological movement disorder) not having a full range of movement in my arms so if I wanted to compete in Tokyo, I had to find some way to swim.

"It doesn't matter if I come back with anything or nothing at all, what matters is being able to say that I'm a Paralympian."

This should have been Tully Kearney's second Paralympics, but she had to withdraw from the Rio Games after a significant progression of her generalised dystonia, as well as an ongoing shoulder injury.

Such was its progression that Kearney - a seven-time world champion - has been re-classified from an S9 swimmer to an S5.

"I was in hospital when the London 2012 Paralympics were on and that was what gave me the feeling that anything was possible, regardless of what I'd been through."

Suzanna Hext had been through a lot. She was 23 and coming to terms with being paralysed from the waist down as she watched the Paralympics from her hospital bed.

A promising young horse rider, her life changed when her horse fell and crushed her. She damaged her spine, shattered her pelvis, crushed her shoulder and had a head injury that left her world in pieces.

But nine years on she will be the one on the television as she swims in the S5 category at the delayed 2020 Paralympics.

The 33-year-old is also famously known for competing in BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing where he was paired with professional dancer Janette Manrara. Bayley was forced to withdraw from the competition in week six, due to sustaining a knee injury from rehearsals.

During his time on the show he danced to Lukas Graham's '7 Years', which he dedicated to the patients and staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he was treated for cancer aged seven.

GB wheelchair fencer Piers Gilliver was eliminated in the round of 16 in the men's sabre (Class A) overnight.

Gilliver was defeated following a gruelling contest with China’s Li Hao at the Makuhari Messe.

The 26-year-old returns to the piste on Thursday for the epee discipline, where he’ll look to go one better than the silver medal he claimed in Rio five years ago.

“I am very disappointed with today because it was a tough draw in the elimination round after the pool matches didn’t really go as I’d hoped," he said.

“I fought well, and I just managed to miss out, which is tough to take. Now I must put it behind me and get focused on tomorrow as the epee is my stronger event.

“I am confident I can put in a good performance.”

The soldier became gravely ill when she collapsed with a lung condition on the eve of the first Invictus Games in London in 2014, and credits the team at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire with saving her life.

So much so that when she won all four swimming events she entered at the Invictus Games in Orlando in 2016, she gave one of her medals to Prince Harry - who created the Games - to give to the team at Papworth, which he did.

British swimmer Louise Fiddes after finishing fifth on her Paralympic debut, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm really happy that the race was so competitive as it proves the Paralympics is moving forward.

"I was so pleased to be in the final and I'm just so happy the Games are going ahead. It's been such a difficult year for the whole British with not being able to train so it's so good to be here.

"I'm definitely disapppointed not to get near my PB but this isn't the event I came for. It's all about the 100m breaststroke for me, hopefully I'll get a medal.

"I can't wait for my next races - a bit nervous but I'm very excited."
