It wasn't the classic we had hoped for. It wasn't the goal-fest we had anticipated. But Real's players can start dusting down their suitcases for Portugal. Whether they make it to next month's final in Lisbon depends on what happens in Munich next Tuesday.

Remember, it's only half-time as Pep Guardiola will be telling his Bayern players. Anything can happen in the second leg. Anything. See you next week for the conclusion.

Jon Partidge:, external With all these dull Champion League games, I'm looking forward to seeing Liverpool's gung-ho style in the competition next season.

I'mReallyNasir:, external I think people would prefer to have Liverpool playing in the semi-finals because at least they will produce entertainment.

Ryleh:, external I really hope both Madrid teams win, I don't think I could bear to watch a Bayern v Chelsea final.

    Stats

The result might not make good reading for Bayern but the stats show how much they dominated this first leg. The last opposing team to enjoy 72% possession in the Bernabeu? Me neither.

The Germans also had 21 attempts on goal compared to Real's 14. They also forced 15 corners. But the only stat that really counts is the result. All eyes will be on the Allianz Arena next week. Over to you Bayern.

After promising at half-time to get his ears pinned back if the scoreline between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich remained 1-0, former England striker Gary Lineker has tweeted:, external Oops! My big mouth has done for my big ears!

Dan Brewer:, external Pep Guardiola's teams are so boring to watch. It's painful.

Joseph Crilley:, external So the four supposed best teams in Europe managed to produce one goal between them.

Hashim Albahbahani:, external This has been the best performance by a referee I've seen for a long while. Well done Howard Webb.

So two hard-fought Champions League semi-finals produce. . . one goal. After Chelsea's goalless stalemate against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, Real Madrid will take a 1-0 lead to Germany next Tuesday for their second leg with Bayern Munich.

    Chris Waddle
BBC Radio 5 live in Madrid

"I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Real Madrid absorbed a lot of possession after Bayern completely dominated the game but the fact they didn't have their shooting boots on has probably cost them a good result.

"You have to give credit to Real because have worked very hard and could have scored three goals themselves. Bayern at home are very strong so this tie is very finely balanced.

"It's not often you can say Bayern have been wasteful in the final third, but tonight it didn't happen for them. Up to the final third they were definitely the stronger side. It is all set up for a very exciting second leg."

Holders Bayern will feel they can retain their European crown. Real face a test of character in the return leg at the Allianz Arena next Tuesday. You get the feeling there is more drama to come in this two-legged tie.

Chaos inside the Real penalty area. The whole of the Bayern bench are out of their seats as Thomas Muller, with Xabi Alonso breathing down his neck, slips inside the six-yard area as he reaches for a loose ball. The Germans scream for a penalty. Howard Webb is not interested.

Four added minutes. Real look content to play down the clock. It's unnervingly quiet inside the Bernabeu.

  12. Postpublished at 21:32 British Summer Time 23 April 2014

We're into the final two minutes of normal time. This has been a tight and hard-fought battle between two European superpowers. Real look as though they are heading to Germany next week with a slender lead. But can Bayern produce a last-gasp twist?

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 21:29 British Summer Time 23 April 2014

Is that the moment Bayern will rue? Mario Gotze, unmarked and in space 10 yards out, looks set to equalise but his shot is too close to Iker Casillas who is able to block. Good save. But Gotze should have done better. Relief around the Bernabeu.

  14. Five minutes to gopublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 23 April 2014

Gareth Bale is certainly not playing like a man who has spent hours and hours in bed with the flu. He has boundless energy and again torments the Bayern defence with a teasing cross.

The decibel levels increase as Gareth Bale delivers a low cross into the Bayern area which the visitors just manage to scramble away before a white shirt can pounce.

Bayern then power up the other end and substitute Thomas Muller has the visiting fans holding their heads after a curling shot that narrowly whistles wide of the target. Time is running out for the Germans.

Simon, from London, via text: How people can say Guardiola has weakened Bayern after the season they've had is beyond me.

Andrew, via text: Our only hope for an open, attacking Champions League final is Bayern Munich v Atletico Madrid.

Joel via text: Arjen Robben looks like the only Bayern player interested in putting the ball in the back of the net. The rest are happy to play football passing drills like it's a Sunday morning.

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Bayern are having to work very hard to create any clear chances. The more compact they have to be to dominate the possession the more vulnerable they will be to the pace of Real Madrid.

"Despite all the possession, Bayern still have not created any real chances. I just feel Madrid are in a superb position because of the space that will appear in the Bayern backline."

  18. 15 minutes remainingpublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 23 April 2014

Chants of "Bale, Bale, Bale" echo around the Bernabeu. And Carlo Ancelotti is listening. Moments later Bale enters the action for Cristiano Ronaldo with 17 minutes of normal time remaining.

So Ronaldo will have to wait for his 50th club and international goal of the season. But can Bale grab his fourth goal against German opposition in the Champions League this season?
