What are the chances of this semi-final going all the way to penalties just as it did when these two met at the same stage two years ago? Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Bayern's slender 2-1 first leg lead before an Arjen Robben penalty took the tie to spot-kicks.

And, surprise, surprise, the Germans won it with Bastian Schweinsteiger converting the decisive effort to give Bayern a 3-1 shoot-out win. Cue floods of tears from Real's fans and players. However, Bayern were sobbing themselves the following month after losing the final to Chelsea in their own stadium.

So, it's true - everything Cristiano Ronaldo touches really does turn to gold. The Real Madrid and Portugal forward only needs one more goal to notch his half century for club and country this season.

Will he achieve the feat wearing his special white and gold Nike boots? The 29-year-old is due to debut the footwear against Bayern to mark winning the Ballon d'Or award earlier this year. Will the former Manchester United man strike gold against Bayern?

Januzaj was born in the Belgian capital of Brussels to Kosovan-Albanian parents and joined United in 2011. The 19-year-old could have played for Kosovo, Albania, Turkey, Serbia and, potentially in the future, England.

Gareth Bale was Real's goal hero last week when his stunning late winner clinched Carlo Ancelotti's side the Copa del Rey against arch-rivals Barcelona. But the 24-year-old will have to be settle for a place on the bench after suffering from a bout of flu.

According to reports, Bale was unable to join up with the team at their hotel after training on Tuesday. Real medical staff had recommended he remain at home to avoid infecting his team-mates.

  8. Jeepers keepers. . .published at 19:08 British Summer Time 23 April 2014

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola is certainly taking no chances on the goalkeeping front. Manuel Neuer is fit to play following a calf injury but the holders have named two goalkeepers among his substitutes in Leopold Zingerle and Lukas Raeder. Wonder if either are any good at coming off the bench to grab a late goal?

In five previous European Cup semi-finals between the clubs, Madrid's only win came in 2000. Bayern progressed in 1976, 1987, 2001 and 2012.

Bayern have lost on their last five visits to the Bernabeu Stadium in the Champions League, including the 2010 final they played there against Inter Milan.

Bayern's former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola has enjoyed nine wins, four draws and just two defeats against Real Madrid in his managerial career.

So, no Gareth Bale in the Real Madrid starting line-up. How much of a loss is that to the hosts? Where will this titanic European tie be won and lost? Can Cristiano Ronaldo make a scoring return?

The front page of Spanish daily sports newspaper Marca describes this showdown as "the night of champions". Crucially they also claim that Ronaldo, who has missed the last four games with a hamstring problem, will "lead the attack."

They don't often get the Madrid line-up wrong and with Carlo Ancelotti having already said that he was "confident" the Ballon d'Or winner would be available, it seems unlikely now that he will miss out. Team news on its way. . .

You can be sure Pep Guardiola will be doing everything to prolong Real's wait for Europe's most sought-after prize. The 43-year-old Spaniard is chasing a remarkable haul of five trophies in his first season in charge of Bayern - not a bad start for the former Barcelona boss.

His side has already won the Bundesliga in record time, as well as the Uefa Super Cup (beating Chelsea on penalties) and the Fifa Club World Cup. Bayern play big rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final of the German Cup on 17 May and will have designs on retaining the Champions League if they can get past Real Madrid.

Jupp Heynckes signed off with a domestic and European treble last season for the first time in Bayern's history, but those big shoes could yet be more than filled by Guardiola.
