Real boss Carlo Ancelotti will be unimpressed that Bayern have had 75% of possession in the opening 35 minutes. Not many visiting teams to the Bernabeu can boast that. The visitors are happy to spray the ball around patiently but they're no closer to unlocking a stubborn defence. Real have done little since taking the lead and Cristiano Ronaldo is cutting a frustrated figure.

Where has that opening half an hour gone? Quick as a flash we're in the final third of the first half and Bayern have their work cut out. The holders are having plenty of possession but they're not hurting their hosts. Arjen Robben is once again their best source for a goal but Real's defence is holding firm.

Stacy Phillips:, external Where did that goal come from? Actually, I don't know why I'm surprised, it is Real Madrid after all.

Pinda Mann:, external That Madrid goal was Bayern from last season. Pep seems to have stopped Munich from expressing themselves.

Tom Edwards: , externalPerfect example of how you beat this Bayern team. Quick breaks targeting weak link Rafinha.

Cristiano Ronaldo is teasing and tormenting the German defence. But his finishing leaves a lot to be desired after scooping an effort he would normally score with his eyes closed over the bar after the Bayern defence is caught napping.

"Bayern are still dominating the game but they are just lacking that little bit of quality in the final third. You would think they would score but this is cup football."

Look away now Bayern fans. Real have never lost a Champions League game on the 17 occasions that Karim Benzema has scored in the competition for the Spanish side.

Bayern are on the ropes. Cristiano Ronaldo, who was involved in the build-up for the goal, heads straight at Manuel Neuer from Angel Di Maria's cross.

"It's been all Bayern Munich and the second decent attack has resulted in a goal. It was a great ball in and Madrid showed real pace there. It was the first time we have really seen the talent Madrid have in this side."

Bang! Real strike the first blow. Bayern fail to deal with a delightful low cross from Fabio Coentrao and Karim Benzema is there to side-foot his side ahead from inside the six-yard area. How will the holders respond?

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"I think Philipp Lahm will be very important because Real Madrid are so good on the counter-attack. We have seen them break with such pace this season - they can destroy any defence. I have got a feeling Real Madrid will do it over the two matches, it's very hard to retain this trophy but it's all about who can take their chances."

Is Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch? Little sign of a threat from the prolific scorer so far. Ronaldo has netted 14 goals in the Champions League this season but he's been anonymous so far. First serious shot of the tie falls to Arjen Robben who fires narrowly wide. Pep Guardiola looks content with what he has seen.

Referee Howard Webb is being kept on his toes by a catalogue of niggly fouls by both sides. Luka Modric looks to the sky after bringing down Toni Kroos which again has Howard reaching for his whistle. The man from Rotherham is in a no-nonsense mood.

"Bayern have started very well. They are moving the ball around well and they have got Real on the back foot. Real Madrid, as the home side, really need to up their game."

Bright and breezy start by the visitors from Germany. Toni Kroos has seen a lot of the ball in the early stages. Bayern win the game's first corner but Pepe's header clears the danger. Real struggling to get out of their own half.

"It's about who is going to take their chances. If you look at Bayern Munich away from home they are not always so strong so this is their big chance, but it's going to be enthralling.

"I think it will be a great game and there will be a lot of goals. You just hope these players turn up and don't get too nervous."

And off we go. They love a good whistle in Spain and Bayern are being jeered every time a red shirt makes contact with the ball. A terrific atmosphere.

The teams have emerged from the tunnel to a raucous reception. I was in the Bernabeu Stadium about six weeks ago and was able to buy tickets on the day of the match. There isn't a spare seat in the house. Tickets are like gold dust.

Ross in London, via text: Hopefully this will be a lot more entertaining than Atletico v Chelsea, but I do think to make the semi-finals more exciting they should only be played over one game rather than two.

Anonymous via text: Bayern's biggest weakness is the inability of their defence to stop through balls from over the top, and with Real's pace I see them reaching the final.
