"David Luiz is having a big impact on the game, breaking up the play and looking to hit the ball early. He is doing very well. I prefer him in that midfield position - he can get away with a few more errors and he has two good feet."

David Luiz...you cheeky chappie. The one with the hair controls a long throw with aplomb, juggles the ball with his back to goal and then goes for an overhead kick but his effort goes wide of the post. Nice try though.

Fernando Torres is very direct when he wins the ball tonight, but he keeps running down blind alleys... which is almost costly when he gives the ball away, Atletico break forward and Gary Cahill has to time his dive to perfection to deflect Diego Costa's angled effort for a corner, which ultimately comes to nothing.

Peter Sagar: As a Newcastle United fan I would say 1968/9 when we won the Fairs Cup. Despite regularly having some of the highest attendances in the country, we've won nothing of consequence since.

Sixteen minutes in and my colleague to my right reckons this has got penalties written all over it. Who's going to take them? Or should we save that debate for later in the night?!

"If you are that close, why not try to be a bit clever? We all saw what Ronaldo did last night."

Willian steps up, but he can't get the required dip and it's snaffled by the fella sat behind the goal.

Chelsea win a free-kick out on the left, they take it short to Ramires on the edge of the box. The Brazilian is brought down and the Blues have a set-piece in a much better position. Good work, Chelsea.

As Chelsea patiently build an attack, it strikes me that Jose Mourinho is so successful with a tactic which offers only the tiniest room for error. There's got to be something to admire in that?

Y2J:, external The 07/08 season for United. Ronaldo was unstoppable, although the 1999 season can never be forgotten by a United fan.

Abhinav Reddy:, external Liverpool 08/09. The way we played from March to May, beating Real and United is possibly the best football I've seen under Rafa.

James Tippett:, external Best season: 08/09. Brentford were the champions of League Two with 85 points. Worst season: 12/13. Defeat by Doncaster on the final day.

  13. Postpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 30 April 2014

    Robbie Savage

"When Chelsea broke on the counter-attack, Atletico had eight men behind the ball. The pattern is set for the game. Both teams are going to sit back."

  14. Postpublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 30 April 2014

BBC Sport's Ben Smith at Stamford Bridge

"I have been watching Jose Mourinho closely in the opening moments of this game. There have been at least three waggles of the index finger towards the referee, more than a few shakes of the head and 30 seconds in which he scribbled furiously onto the small pad he keeps on the wall in front of his dugout. Chelsea seeing more of the ball. Atletico the closest to the breakthrough."

Diego Simeone, looking rather like a mafia don in his black shirt and tie combo, urges his team on from the sidelines as Chelsea begin to settle into the contest by stroking the ball about confidently. Nothing to separate these two yet though.

"Chelsea were so lucky there. It hit the bar and then the post. What a good start by Atletico Madrid."

There is nothing a static, parked bus can do when genius graces the pitch. Koke almost breaks the deadlock in spectacular style when, from a cleared corner, he whips the ball back in with devilish bend which sees it hit the crossbar while Mark Schwarzer gropes at fresh air. A let-off for the Blues.

    Fernando TorresImage source, AP

Fernando Torres looks sparky early on as he drives at the Atletico defence before he is bundled off the ball all too easily. The Italian referee laid down a marker there, that he won't be blowing for too many niggly fouls.

  19. Postpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 30 April 2014

It looks like Cesar Azpilicueta is playing wide right early on, with Eden Hazard out on the left. Interesting tactics from Jose.
