So Atletico march on and Chelsea are sent crashing out of the Champions League. I'm afraid that's it from us for tonight, but be sure to look out for reaction from Stamford Bridge, Robbie Savage's tactical verdict and Ben Smith's blog in the next few hours on the BBC Sport football page. I'm off now so, until next time, goodnight.

James in London: Re: Simeone leaving Atletico. If he wins La Liga and the Champions League, why would he leave?

Jill, Leamington Spa: Mourinho is right - all along he has said they are a team in transition, for them to get this far plus all the injuries is to be applauded. All the critics should look to their own teams.

Atletico, remember, need just two more wins to wrap up the La Liga title. It's incredible that they've broken up the Real Madrid/Barcelona dominance in Spanish football. We'll be covering all of the big games in La Liga's title race run-in via our European live text service.

If we also throw it forward with Atletico, will they still have Diego Simeone, Diego Costa and Koke on their books in 12 months' time?

Real Stealth:, external Have a feeling, with time, Salah could be better than Hazard. Pace and quicker with the ball, just needs to adapt and control.

Korede Oyewoga:, external If Rodgers can do it at Merseyside in 2 years, Diego Simeone can do it at the Emirates in 6 months. Please come to Arsenal.

  6. How's stat?published at 22:20 British Summer Time 30 April 2014

It has taken Atletico Madrid 40 years to return to the European Cup final, that gap eclipsing the 38-year wait by Inter Milan (1972-2010).

Fernando Torres became the first Spaniard to score in three CL semi-finals (2008, 2012 and 2014). Only two players have scored in more semi-finals: Cristiano Ronaldo (5) and Zinedine Zidane (4).

Atletico Madrid are now undefeated in their last 13 European matches, while their last defeat in the Champions League dates back to 8 December 2009.

So, throwing things forward, what do Chelsea need to do in the summer. Surely a striker will be top of Jose Mourinho's shopping list? And what about just behind the number nine? Other than Eden Hazard, the Blues often struggle to find players who can break down the very best of defences...

AKarim:, external Maybe Chelsea need to start not loaning out players. Lukaku and Courtois could have made a difference tonight. Oh, Courtois did.

Adam Toth: Jose should have parked the bus. That's the only thing he knows how to do. Trying to actually play football and attack does not work for him.

Atletico midfielder Tiago: "It's a dream, we have a great spirit, we are a great team, we all work together, now we are in the final in Lisbon, the dreams can be true.

"It is not easy to play here, we know that. But we knew Chelsea had to play more. We knew we are very good away from home. After our goal Chelsea went a bit down, we got confident and now we are there.

"We know Real Madrid are a fantastic team with great players. They can win the game in any action but we are there. Last year we won the Cup in their stadium so we are confident."

Sean Castle:, external Tactics fine. No Lampard, no Matic, and no goalscoring striker. Chelsea beaten by individual mistakes and strong opposition.

Jose Mourinho is talking as if the season is over. Of course Chelsea are outsiders to win the Premier League title now but, with games against Norwich and Cardiff to come, they must take six points and hope that both Manchester City and Liverpool slip up. All the permutations are in this feature.

Craig O'Halloran: Atletico have been excellent all season. Mourinho only had one tactic to foil them...defend. If he opened up and tried to play they would have been beaten home and away.

  14. Manager reactionpublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 30 April 2014

Here's more from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "I can't be critical of a group of players who are trying everything. We have problems with injuries, suspensions and players who can't play in the Champions League. It's disappointing to lose but I am proud of them. I prefer to say we did everything that was possible for us and if we scored to go 2-1 up we would have been on top of the game.

"Next season will be better than this season - that's our objective - the objective of everybody. Our young players will be better, hopefully we will have a couple of players to improve our team and we will try to do better next season."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "One minute in the second half decided everything. A minute where the Atletico goalkeeper makes an impossible save to a John Terry header then the penalty that kills the game.

"After that there was only one team with morale high, knowing with half an hour left they had control. For about 60 minutes we had the game, but semi-finals and important matches are made of details and this was a very important detail. Congratulations to them because they are a very good side and what they are doing in Spanish league is fantastic."

Atletico loaded plenty of attacks down that left-hand side and it brought them two goals. Something for Jose to ponder?

"Stamford Bridge emptied very quickly. Atletico fans remain in place away to my left, dancing and singing, scarcely believing what awaits them on May 24 when they play their great rivals Real.

"At the final whistle, Jose Mourinho sought out his counterpart Diego Simeone and a number of the coaching staff to shake their hands. There was even an embrace for David Villa. It was an acknowledgement that on the night they were simply beaten by the better team. Half-hearted strains of 'we're going to win the league' could be heard at the end. But this was a bitterly disappointing result for Chelsea as John Terry's tears in the centre circle showed."

On reflection, one of the most decisive moments of the night came when Thibaut Courtois, on loan at Atletico from Chelsea, made that fantastic save from John Terry's second-half header. It was still 1-1 at that stage...
