"And here comes Hurst, he's got - some people are on the pitch! They think it's all over...

    "It is now! It's four..."

  5. Postpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

All puff, no precision from West Germany, as Bobby Moore and Jack Charlton continue to marshal the skies. Almost there now, as the Germans throw men downfield...

  6. FINAL FIVEpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Into the last five minutes. We've been here before. No cheap free-kicks now lads...

  7. CLOSE!published at 14:01 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

On your feet lads - it's a German corner. They take it quickly too, with George Cohen defending bravely to meet it at the back post. Alan Ball - who else? - carries the ball clear and England have it down the left.

Bobby Moore finds Roger Hunt, who shoots - just wide! What a crack.

Simon:, external I think that ball wasn't over the line, I hope England never fall on the other side of these contentious decisions in big games.

Ian Golden:, external No way was that a goal. The ball didn't cross the line. We'll have to wait for the colour film to see for definite.

Christopher Wilcox:, external Never a goal, that

  10. LAST TENpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Ten minutes remain of an engrossing final. Alan Ball looks like he could do another hour.

Everyone else looks like they could barely manage a minute.

Again the Wembley crowd jeer England for passing the ball back to Gordon Banks. Extraordinary.

Just keep it lads! Keep it!

  12. Postpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Geoff Hurst looks finished. His legs have gone, stumbling about like a marathon runner. Just 10 minutes to go Geoffrey lad, keep on running...

  13. Postpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

I should have mentioned that Roger Hunt was standing right by the ball after Geoff Hurst's shot and he turned away in celebration instead of nodding in the rebound. He was certain that it was in!

The results of that vote will be very interesting. It did not look clearcut to me at all, but linesman Tofik Bakhramov was certain. In the end...
